When you live in a state with mountains, snow and rain, you’re bound to have rivers. And Washington has them in abundance, with many rivers running from both the Cascades and Olympics, as well as a few originating in SE Washington's Blue Mountains. When you combine these rivers with the legendary eye of famed Northwest photographer Asahel Curtis, the result is a stunning collection of 1920s lantern slide photos showcasing these ribbons of water nearly a century ago.Image
Pend Oreille River
The first photo shows someone fishing in the Elwha River in the north Olympics. The second photo features the Pend Oreille River at Albany Falls in the northeast corner of the state. The third photo shows the Spokane River’s Lower Spokane Falls, Monroe Street Bridge and a railway bridge in Spokane. The fourth and final shot features the Snake River at Central ferry dock.Image

These '20s-era lantern slide photos are found in a Digital Archives collection with an extremely long name: Conservation Department, Planning and Development Division, Lantern Slide Shows, 1908-1939. Most of the photos here were taken by Curtis.Image
