“Roy City Council received suggestions Monday for drastic changes to ease mounting debt.” A speaker from the Association of Washington Cities “suggested the council look at key ways to cut costs for this year, and make a 2009 budget feasible….Council must decide what services to provide. ‘That’s a fact,’ Gjertsen said. ‘You have to decide on the library or streets, the library or police.’” (Nisqually Valley News [Yelm], 10-24-08)

School library closures in the Bainbridge Island School District “are one of the more visible results of a painful summer budgeting session, which saw school district administrators shore up a $1.5 million projected shortfall.” (Bainbridge Island Review, 10-25-08)

Buildings:

The Wilbur Town council has approved a bid to build custom storage cabinets to be place in the hall outside the city Clerk’s office, for use by the Hesseltine Public Library and the clerk’s office. (Wilbur Register, 10-23-08)

“Quincy (North Central Regional Library) city staff are hunting for money for a new library. The city is applying for a $750,000 Community Development Block Grant to help pay for a $1.5 million building.” (Columbia Basin Herald [Moses Lake], 10-24-08)

Letters and Editorials:

A letter writer from Kennewick comments—“I was surprised that in your otherwise even-handed endorsement of Rossi you failed to mention that his 2003 Senate budget threatened the State Library you had praised Sam Reed for saving. (Oct. 3)…The savings libraries enjoyed on these (WSL) resources in 2003 were worth millions more than cutting the state library would have trimmed from the state budget.” (Tri-City Herald, 10-26-08)

An editorial discussing whether a vote for a new fire station in Issaquah (King County Library System) should be offered now or later mentions that the city has been successful with “simple issue” requests, such as for a library or police station. It also mentions that the new fire station would cost more in two more years, “but, realistically, there will be more property owners by then to share the cost.” (Issaquah Press. 10-22-08)

A columnist from the Neill Public Library in Pullman celebrates Noah Webster’s 250^th birthday, and says that as a children’s librarian, ‘I am given a front-row seat in the theater of children’s words”. (Moscow-Pullman Daily News, 11-01-08)

A “Soundoff” column is adamantly against passage of a South Kitsap School District levy and notes that “the library (Kitsap RL) and school levy proposals will more likely than not be joined into one in February 2009”. (Independent [Port Orchard], 10-11-08)

Programmed events in the Clallam County Reads discussion of To Kill a Mockingbird are being completed, with the Port Angeles High School orchestra performing music from the movie and the director of the Intiman Theater’s 2007 “best-selling production” discussing the work. “With live jazz playing in the background, an all-star cast of local characters will lead teams of guest sleuths on a hunt for clues in Murder Maestro, Please, a fund-raising event at the Anacortes Public Library.” This will be the Anacortes Library Foundation’s first such event. The Graham Pierce County Library will present local author Laurence A. ‘Andy’ Anderson discussing his book In the Shadow of the Mountain: Early Days of Graham, Kapowsin, Benston, Electron, and Vicinity.” The Summit Pierce County Library will hold a toy-making workshop for children in grades 3-6, while the Bonney Lake PCL will offer a free ‘Monday Night at the Movies”, and several libraries offer pirate-themed events with “Whales, Sails, Treasures, and Tales”. South Hill PCL will offer a workshop of “recycling a book into a work of art”, and Sumner PCL offers a “Living Silver” retirement series, with Mary Lloyd, author of Bold Retirement: Mining Your Own Silver for a Rich Life. “The Everett AquaSox donated more than 1,000 children’s books to the Sno-Isle Libraries, to add to the library system’s children’s collection and donate to local childcares served by the Sno-Isle Libraries mobile services department.
