1) FIRST TUESDAYS PROGRAM ON WEB 2.0 NOW ONLINE

The archive of the First Tuesdays program from Nov. 4, with Joy Neal of the La Conner Regional Library discussing “Web 2.0 on a Shoestring,” sources for self-paced web training for library staff, is available at www.sos.wa.gov/quicklinks/tuesday. 2) WEIRD WASHINGTON PROGRAM AT THE STATE LIBRARY

Join us for an evening event at the Washington State Library on Wednesday, November 19, 2008 at 6:30 p.m. featuring Jeff Davis and Al Eufrasio, authors of the book Weird Washington. Jeff and Al will share a few of their favorite stories from their exploration of the weird and wonderful landmarks Washington has to offer. Come to learn about the unique places in Washington that are waiting to be enjoyed!

3) DUPAGE PROGRAM ON NOV. 21—INFORMATION LITERACY FOR LIFE

The College of DuPage, Library Challenges & Opportunities 2009 Webcasts topic for Nov. 21, 9:00 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. PST, features a panel of librarians exploring how school, public, and academic librarians can collaborate to create comprehensive information literacy programs that span a user’s lifetime. You’ll get the foundation for starting a local dialogue based on national principles.

4) CHUNKIT! A NEW FREE TOOL FOR INTERNET RESEARCH

ChunkIt! is a new free safe and innovative add-on to Firefox or Internet Explorer on a PC or Mac. ChunkIt! searches and extracts valuable "chunks" of information often hidden within the countless hyperlinks that comprise the Web. It's a useful application for doing research and gathering information on search engines like Google or Yahoo and finding facts on websites like cnn.com and msn.encarta. It even works with subscription databases like ProQuest and eLibrary. ChunkIt! allows you to see the significant chunks of information contained within your search results, and acts as a “search inside” tool for all of your searches.

ChunkIt! will be demonstrated in two webinars conducted by Katie Hope and Jeff Wong of the TigerLogic Corporation. The webinars are being offered on December 3 at 10:00 a.m. and noon, PST. 5) APPLY FOR AN ICMA PUBLIC LIBRARY INNOVATION GRANT

Local governments can now apply for an ICMA (International City/County Management Association) Public Library Innovation Grant. These grants, supported by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, will focus on using the public library as a vital tool in addressing community priorities and issues, and will be anchored by a partnership between the office of the chief administrative officer (city, county, and town manager) and the public library.

Individual grants will range from $20,000 to $60,000 and will be 18 months in length. Applications and guidelines are available at www.icma.org/publiclibrarygrants. Applications are dues Friday, January 9, 2009. For more information, please contact Molly Donelan at [email protected].

6) GUIDE TO IDENTIFYING NITRATE FILM AVAILABLE

The Nitrate Film Interest Group is pleased to announce that they have completed a much needed basic guide that illustrates how to identify nitrate film as well as safety precautions and hazards when dealing with nitrate. This document, titled “Identifying and Handling Nitrate Film,” is available in PDF format from the NFIG’s page within the AMIA (Association of Moving Image Archivists) website, www.amianet.org/groups/interest/nitrate/nitrate.php. In addition to these basic guidelines, the document also contains a contact list of archives and labs that have agreed to be of service in identifying and in some cases accepting nitrate film. Multiple times every year the group is asked what facilities are able to handle nitrate film and this document provides the contact information for archives and labs around the world.

7) COLLECTIONS OF CHILDREN’S MATERIALS TO THREE LUCKY LIBRARIES

Would you like the opportunity to receive more than 1,000 children's books, videos, audio books and recordings for your library collection? Every year the Bookapalooza program, administered by ALA’s Association for Library Service to Children (ALSC), gives more than 3,000 newly published children’s materials to three libraries. These collections (estimated to be worth $10,000 each) are given to the winning libraries to be used in a way that creatively enhances library service to children and families.
