Yikes! Tough times for libraries ...

Many Washington libraries are in trouble. The recession and failed levy measures mean less money -- and that means cutbacks. Some libraries are having to reduce hours, services and staff. Case in point: A library in the Cowlitz County town of Castle Rock might soon close its doors for good. That would be a terrible loss not only for the children and families relying on that library, but for libraries in general.

As Secretary of State, Sam Reed oversees the Washington State Library sees it as his role to be a passionate advocate for libraries throughout Washington. Sam recently visited the Castle Rock Library and met with librarian Vicki Selander. A very narrow defeat (FOUR votes) of its levy measure last fall is forcing the library and its Friends of the Library group to scramble to stave off closure. While it has enough dollars to stay afloat through September, it needs another $20,000 to keep operating through April 2010.

Here is a great story about Sam’s visit to the library that appeared in The (Longview) Daily News.

Especially in these tough economic times, libraries are used more than ever. People who are out of work rely on them in their search for new jobs or to find out how to file for unemployment.

If you’re interested in helping rescue the Castle Rock Library, call the library at (360) 274-6961 or e-mail it at [email protected]. The library’s address is 137 Cowlitz St. W. in Castle Rock. The Castle Rock Friends of the Library can be reached at PO Box 1350, Castle Rock, WA 98611.
