Calling poetry fans ... meet the state's first Poet Laureate

[/caption] If you’re a poetry fan, you’ll want to attend an event at the Washington State Library on Thursday, April 9. Samuel Green, Washington’s very first Poet Laureate, is being honored in a special ceremony at the library that night. The program begins at 6:30, with the doors opening at 6. During the event, Sam will do a reading of his poetry. The poems will be about Washington-based subjects. He also will bring some of his books to sell and will autograph them, too. Green is a 30-plus-year veteran of the Poetry-in-the-Schools program, has been the Distinguished Visiting Northwest Writer at Seattle University, and has taught in hundreds of classrooms. Sam was appointed Washington’s first Poet Laureate by Governor Gregoire on December 17, 2007. His two-year term ends this year. During his tenure, he has been able to promote poetry throughout the state by giving readings, attending workshops and making personal appearances. The State Library is located in Tumwater at 6880 Capitol Blvd. S., across the street from the Point Tavern.
