Veterans Day
As the anticipation of a three day weekend approaches, the Office of the Secretary of State remembers the reason why Monday is a federal holiday- to actively honor our veterans. Here are some of the ways we are remembering our veterans and we ask you to join us.
The Washington State Veteran’s Memorials are located throughout the capitol campus in Olympia and becomes a place of remembrance on Monday for veterans and loved ones seeking solitude in the Washington State Veteran’s Memorials.
Across the street from the World War II memorial, our Archives staff, Mary Hammer, rearranged the former Vietnam Wall exhibit located in the Washington State Archives that showcases the artifacts left at the Vietnam War Memorial since 1987, in memory of the soldiers who died in that war. This includes a list of the fallen, helmets, caps, boots, jackets and coats, wreaths, flags, books, beads, flowers, whiskey, beer, pictures, photographs, letters, medals, pins, vases, candles, and many other objects left at the memorial wall on the state capitol grounds.
Those not in the Olympia area and looking for a different way to honor our veteran’s may consider giving back through a charitable donation. Many options can be found through the Combined Fund Drive which offers a safe and reliable way for State Employees to donate. For those non State Employees the Combined Fund Drive can still be an enormous resource of the validity of an organization.
