If the state legislature does not appropriate “back-fill” funds the State Library will be an estimated $2.4 million short, a quarter of the budget. Therefore, we are examining our services to determine which are essential and we want your perspective. Please take a few minutes to complete our online survey located at sos.wa.gov/q/2014. Thank you for helping us develop a preferred future for the Washington State Library. Please complete the survey by close of day Friday, October 17, 2014. Please don’t respond to it more than once. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 2) GET THE GUIDE Exciting news! An update of COSLA’s (Chief Officers of State Library Agencies) Reference Guide to National Projects has just been released. This resource provides basic information for state and local libraries about current national projects associated with digital inclusion, digital literacy, and broadband adoption. COSLA created this guide through its Public Access Technology Community, which is generously supported by a grant from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation and editing and production support from OCLC. Each project profile features:

  • Project summary followed by project details and reference information;
  • Alphabetical listing of project profiles by project name;
  • Overview chart that captures the focus areas for each project to make it easy to find projects of interest.
Over half of the entries are new or updated. Newly profiled since the January 2014 edition are the Pew Research Center Internet Project and the Digital Inclusion Survey. If you have questions about or suggestions for the Guide, contact Tim Cherubini at [email protected]. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 3) CALL FOR PROPOSALS – BUILDING BRIDGES Mark your calendars for the first annual Building Bridges Washington State Higher Education Technology Conference, which will be held March 12 – 13, 2015 in Spokane at the Red Lion at the Park. This event will bring educators and technologists together to increase communication, build relationships, and gain a deeper understanding of how technology can be used effectively to maximize student success. The conference organizers are currently seeking proposals from educators, technologists, administrators, research staff, and other interested parties in support of this year's theme: "Building an environment of collaboration across boundaries." Presentations may be standard 50-minute sessions or 5-minute lightning rounds. Session tracks are:
  • Technology;
  • Library;
  • eLearning;
  • Institutional Research.

If your library doesn’t have Library Now, this is the time to think about adding it. To learn more about Library Now, consider attending one of our upcoming webinars:
  • Monday, October 13, 2:00 – 3:00 p.m. PDT;
  • Tuesday, October 14, 10:00 – 11:00 a.m. PDT.
The webinars will provide the latest from Boopsie, including information on usage statistics, the successful online marketing campaign, user survey results, new app features, and more. Staff from Boopsie will be the primary presenters, hosted by WSL staff. The webinars will run on our Blackboard Collaborate platform.
