The Shelton Timberland Library is so much more. “The future of the library, in my opinion, is as a community space, solving community issues,” said Senior Library Manager Patty Ayala Ross. “If we don’t show our relevance to our community, we won’t be viable.” The Shelton library shows its relevance through providing community outreach and being at the table to solve community issues, Ross said. (Mason County Journal, Shelton, 4/23/15) 125 years young: A milestone for Tacoma’s legal paper (Tacoma Daily Index, Tacoma, 5/1/15) Library brick laying The Library Foundation hosted a brick laying at the Anacortes Public Library recently. People can donate to the Library Foundation to have a brick engraved for themselves or a loved one. Bricks are engraved after a group of five or six is collected. (Anacortes American, Anacortes, 5/6/15) Buildings Library remodel project now ‘reset to zero’ (Mercer Island Reporter, Mercer Island, 4/28/15) And the work begins: Village Green Community Center will be ‘a place for inspiration’ Residents gathered May 3 at the Village Green to see the start of the community center/library project. Construction started on the community center, which, in less than a year, will be home to a senior center, a Boys & Girls Club, and a new Kitsap Regional Library branch. (North Kitsap Herald, Poulsbo, 5/8/15) Visit Sunnyside Library at new location (Daily Sun News, Yakima, 5/6/15) Letters & Editorials Today’s libraries offer much more than just books This letter to the editor from Beverly Richmond, Director of Priest Lake Public Library, talked about the value of libraries and the many and varied services they offer, and encouraged voters to vote on May 19 to pass the levy. (Newport Miner, Newport, 4/22/15) Olympians share their visions for Olympia This editorial shared parts of a discussion on a recent Facebook thread including the following suggestion: ”A new downtown library. The Olympia Timberland Library is the 12th busiest library in Washington State. The city should find the money to build a new library that serves the entire city population.” (Olympia Power & Light, Olympia, 5/--/15) People Young MV library patrons win contest The Mount Vernon City Library recently announced the winners of its annual Create a Bookmark Contest for children. This year’s theme was Every Hero Has a Story. Alexandra Lammon, Thomas Malloy, and Jack Gayle were the winners. Hannah Dutton received an honorable mention as the Librarian’s Choice winner. Each winner was presented a $20 gift certificate donated by Easton’s Books. He replaces Darlene Weber, who now manages the Snohomish Library. (Millcreek View, Millcreek, 5/--/15) biz bits Sno-Isle Libraries has announced that Susan Hempstead has joined the library district as a strategic relations manager and Kassy Rodeheaver has joined as lead librarian for business. (The Herald, Everett, 5/2/15) Our own expressions from the Pierce County Library art and writing contest Katlyn Daniels placed second in the 9th-10th grade art category; Katherine Hunter placed first in the 7th-8th grade art category; and Katie Lasko placed first in the 11th-12th grade art category.
