Please contact Carolyn Petersen at [email protected]. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 2) 2ND ANNUAL HISTORICIAL ZINE CONTEST Washington State Library is sponsoring the 2nd Annual Historical Zine Contest. Participants are asked to create a Zine about some aspect of Washington history using primary resources. Entries will be accepted from four age groups:
  • Grades 4-6
  • Grades 7-9
  • Grades 10-12
  • Adults of all ages

Washington State Library is a division of the Office of the Secretary of State. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 3) WHO ARE WE? WRITING, ART, AND FILM CONTEST 2016 Legacy Washington, a division of the Office of the Secretary of State, is sponsoring a contest for Washington students in grades 6-12.
  • Participating students will explore the question of who they are and who they hope to become.
  • Students can submit entries in different formats, including writings, film projects, or two-dimensional art.
  • The contest starts Wednesday, September 7 and runs through Wednesday, November 30, 2016.
All Washington middle school or high school students are invited to enter. More contest details are here. Presenter: Megan Kellner, Associate Fellow, National Library of Medicine This month’s PNR Rendezvous webinar features Megan Kellner who created the PubMed for Nurses video tutorial to provide nurses and nursing students with an introduction to searching the literature. The webinar will discuss the tutorial development process, what makes nurses’ research needs unique, and reflections on the project a year later. No registration required for this free webinar. Robin Jones, dentist and President of Children's International Health Relief, will describe educating patients about the importance of dental health through use of smart phones and other devices at Dental Village private practices and community outreach sites. Meg Brunner, staff librarian at the University of Washington's Alcohol & Drug Abuse Institute, will present an online toolkit of resources created to increase outreach and education for Washington communities needing reliable substance abuse information. Andrea Ball and Joanne Rich, librarians at the University of Washington Health Sciences Library, will present about recording interviews and lectures and creating interactive modules to expand the reach of the library's instruction to more patrons. Noel Nicolai, Education and Library Coordinator for Pullman Regional Hospital, will explain using interactive training to increase health literacy and access to health information by the senior population in Whitman County, Washington.   • Webinar Series on Data Analytics to Improve Student Performance
The Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction is conducting a series of monthly free webinars on best practices relating to performance indicators, such as chronic absenteeism, behavior, ninth grade failure, and postsecondary enrollment and remediation. The series is aimed at school counselors, educators, and community partners who wish to improve support systems, data use, and instruction to boost student achievement. It's part of OSPI's Graduation A Team Effort (GATE). Register here.
  • Pave the Way Conference
Check out the Washington Student Achievement Council's "Pave the Way" conference November 1-2, 2016 in Tacoma. The conference focuses on policies and strategies aimed at helping underrepresented and underserved students achieve educational success.
