1) GATHERING IDEAS FOR LSTA 2010 FUNDING SUSPENDED FOR THIS YEAR

We wish to announce that there will be no open period in the spring of 2009 for a Gathering Ideas process regarding suggestions for the use of 2010 LSTA funding by the Washington State Library. Projects that are currently underway will consume almost all of the federal LSTA funds that the State Library anticipates receiving. We look forward to resuming the Gathering Ideas process again when one or more of the current projects have reached their conclusion. If you have questions or comments, please contact Jeff Martin at 360-704-5248 or [email protected]. You may also contact him with ideas for the future use of LSTA funding as those ideas occur to you. These ideas will be held for future consideration.

2) FIRST TUESDAYS JAN 13 FEATURES WASHINGTON RURAL HERITAGE

The First Tuesdays guest speakers on Jan. 13, 2009, at 9:00 a.m. for an hour, will be Evan Robb and Kirsten Furl of the Washington State Library, discussing the Washington Rural Heritage Program. The First Tuesdays free webinar will be available on Jan. 13 at webj.horizonwimba.com, Washington Training Room 1. First Tuesdays began as a service to small and rural libraries, but those from any library are welcome to take part. Branch staff should first check with supervisors. If you have never participated in any Wimba session, you will need to go through a quick set-up wizard first. 3) TWO TRAININGS ON JAN. 14, INCLUDING LIBRARY 2.0 HOSTED BY WSL

The Washington State Library will host a Library 2.0 live online training event for library staff on January 14, 2009, from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. Registration is required; the training is free. Register at www.sos.wa.gov/quicklinks/2-oh.

4) 2008 STATEWIDE DATABASE TRIALS END

The 2008 Statewide Database Trials, which ran through November and December, are now closed. A lot of interesting products from a number of vendors were available during these trials, and we hope that libraries found the trial period useful. Perhaps the most important part of the trials is the final step, expressing your interest in those databases that struck your fancy. Libraries, by submitting interest, ensure that vendors realize the value of statewide trials and continue to participate in them. It also presents the opportunity to discover a group purchasing possibility, potentially saving Washington libraries significant amounts.

Please fill out the 2008 Database Trials Interest Form as soon as you get a chance, and let us know which products you liked.

5) MOVIE LICENSING OFFER FROM MPLC

As a reminder, MPLC (Motion Picture Licensing Corporation) is again offering public libraries in Washington the opportunity to purchase discounted public performance site licenses for showing movies. The cost has increased slightly to $60 per year per library location, or for a license which includes Walt Disney Pictures, the cost is $165 per building per year.

6) MARYANN KOHL SUMMER READING CREATIVITY WORKSHOPS

Save these dates for a workshop with nationally known author and presenter MaryAnn Kohl – Saturday, February 7 at Redmond Public Library, and Saturday, May 16 at Ellensburg Public Library, both from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. MaryAnn will provide a full day workshop that stresses the process of art: exploration, discovery, and individual creativity. 7) ALA/YALSA COURSES ON WORKING WITH YOUTH

The Young Adult Library Services Association (YALSA), a division of the American Library Association (ALA), has opened registration for three online courses in Winter 2009: "Booktalks Quick and Simple" (Nancy Keane); "Boys and Books: Encouraging Early Teen and Tween Boys to Read" (Jenine Lillian) and "Power Programming for Teens" (Amy Alessio).

Costs are $135 for YALSA members, $175 for ALA members and $195 for nonmembers. Discounts are available for groups of ten or more.
