Volume 11, December 03, 2015 for the WSL Updates mailing list Topics include: 1) EGGBOT ROBOTICS KIT NOW AVAILABLE FOR SIGN UP & CIRCULATION 2) BECOME A STATE-APPROVED CHILD CARE TRAINER 3) 2016 LIBRARY LEGISLATIVE DAY 4) REFERENCE SERVICES COURSE OFFERED ONLINE 5) IMLS FOCUS CONFERENCE 2015 6) FREE CE OPPORTUNITIES NEXT WEEK --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 1) EGGBOT ROBOTICS KIT NOW AVAILABLE FOR SIGN UP & CIRCULATION The Washington State Library is accepting signups from public and tribal libraries for an EggBot Robotics kit. This STEAM device is a compact, easy to use, open-source art robot that can draw on spherical or egg-shaped objects. The EggBot kit contains materials to serve 8 to 20 children at one time depending on how it is deployed. The kit contains 5 laptops, 1 projector, and 5 EggBots. The kit is contained in two shipping cases. The spherical objects, such as ping pong balls, are NOT included in the kit. Each library will need to provide those. Additional technical details can be discovered at http://egg-bot.com/. WSL only has one EggBot kit, which we will begin shipping on November 9, 2015. The circuit will work as follows:

One week is allowed for travel between libraries;
Then, the library will have the kit for three weeks before sending it on to the next library. One week is allotted for experimentation with the device to see what is possible. The remaining two weeks are intended for programming;
Longer times will be scheduled if an entire library system wishes to participate.

Washington State’s Department of Early Learning (DEL) is the state agency which administers training for child care center staff. DEL is excited to announce a new streamlined approach that will enable more librarians and library staff to deliver training to child care providers. The revised process seeks to:

Improve the experience of potential state-approved trainers;
Increase the number of qualified trainers;
Improve access and opportunities for training in rural and multilingual communities.

DEL training requirements, called “State Training and Registry System (STARS)”, have been in place since 1999. For additional information visit sos.wa.gov/q/DELSTARS. Questions? Registration is now open; click on preceding link for more information and to register. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 4) REFERENCE SERVICES COURSE OFFERED ONLINE Highline College Library & Information Services Program is offering LIBR 150 "Reference Services" as an online course for 5 credits this winter. This course features development of proficiency in providing face-to-face and remote reference services in a variety of settings by focusing on:

nature and purpose of reference services
library principles governing reference services
customer service
conducting effective reference interviews
developing familiarity with a broad array of print and electronic resources

Attention is also paid to assisting library users to become proficient in using library resources themselves. Classes begin January 11, 2016. Contact [email protected] for more information. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 5) IMLS FOCUS CONFERENCE 2015 Nearly 300 library and museum professionals gathered for the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS) Focus Conference in New Orleans on November 16-17, 2015 to discuss the crucial role that libraries and museums play in their communities. In a nutshell, the main take-away: Libraries and museums are more important than ever in the fabric of our society. Using the themes of “Community Engagement,” “Engaging Learners” and “Collections and Digital Access,” participants tackled issues such as:

how libraries and museums can provide better services to new Americans and immigrants
how our museums and libraries can harness the collective wisdom of the crowd to generate content
why we must rethink the user experience
tools and resources available for libraries and museums offering Makerspaces
