If every picture tells a story, this one from Feb. 13, 1968, is evidence the times were changing. That's Pat O'Day, the legendary deejay and concert promoter, and Seattle's own Jimi Hendrix, on the brink of international stardom. The Garfield High School dropout has returned to his alma mater for a special pep assembly.

Jimi epitomized cool, yet when it came time to talk to the kids he was "absolutely petrified," fleeing without receiving an honorary diploma. Seven months later, Hendrix returned to Seattle in unconditional triumph. His new double album was No. 1.

Fast forward to 1970: "Bridge over Troubled Water," fittingly, topped the charts, and Jimi was dead at 27 of an accidental barbiturate overdose. O'Day flew to London to bring home his friend's body. "It was one of the saddest duties of my life. What a tragedy. In my view, he's the greatest rock guitarist ever, and just the sweetest guy you could imagine."
