1. Describe the database product(s). Include information on subject scope, percentage of full-text, dates of coverage, target audience (including age ranges), and how often the contents are updated.
Grove Dictionary of Art Online
The Grove Dictionary of Art Online is a subscription product that provides Web access to the entire text of The Dictionary of Art (Grove, 1996, 34 vols.) with additions and updates to the text, plus extensive image links and the functional capabilities possible with an online reference resource.
The Grove Dictionary of Art Online offers convenient access to:
- 45,000 signed articles on every aspect of the visual arts from every country and civilization from prehistory through the present.
- Multicultural in scope. The articles are written by 6,802 contributors from 120 countriesevery country recognized by the UN has an entry in the Dictionary.
- 26 million words, covering both the fine arts (painting, sculpture, architecture) and the decorative arts (ceramics, metalworking, interior design, jewelry, printmaking, glass, textiles, and more.)
- 500,000+ bibliographic citations, which can be searched independently from the text (or with the text).
- The Dictionarys award-winning Index of 720,000 entries can also be searched independently. Users can do a free-text search on any word in the Dictionary or in the Index, providing a variety of ways to find information.
- Boolean searching, Concept searching (the search engine uses its internal thesaurus to match your search term with related terms), and Pattern searching (use this when you are not sure how to spell what you are looking forvery handy!) are all available options.
- 22,000+ links to color images. These links are chosen from high-quality museum and other sites to complement the text of the Dictionary. The links are monitored regularly for stability, and many of the links offer additional information about the work to the material contained in the Dictionary. We are continuing to add to the number of available links (we started with 8,000 at the launch of the product in November 1998).
- 30,000 additional links to color images through our partnership with The Bridgeman Art Library. These images are searchable on artists name, nationality, century, pull-down menu of topics, location, or keywords.
- Extensive system of cross-references with articles that lead to related information.
- Regular additions of new articles, and updates of existing information, scheduled quarterly.
New Grove Dictionary of Opera Online
The New Grove Dictionary of Opera Online is a subscription product that provides Web access to the full text of The New Grove Dictionary of Opera (Grove, 1992, 4 vols.) with additions and updates to the text, plus extensive image links, selected sound links (coming soon), and the functional capabilities possible with an online reference resource.
The New Grove Dictionary of Opera Online features 11,000 articles and four million words, and encompasses over 1,800 operas and 5,600 composers and performers. It also covers librettists and literary sources, landmark opera houses, cities and countries, stagecraft, architecture, and film and musical theater.
Detailed worklists and extensive bibliographies are fully searchable. The New Grove Dictionary of Opera Online brings the long-standing tradition for the excellence found in Grove's music dictionaries to the internet, with links to picture resources, opera-related web sites, and (coming soon) links to audio sources.

Subsequent quarterly updates will include the addition of a discography, new links, as well as updates on deaths, new operas and performers, and up-to-date scholarship on opera.
2. What are the hardware and software requirements for using all the features of the product?
- Access to both products is available on any computer that supports an Internet Web connection.
- Browser required: Netscape 4.0 or Internet Explorer 4.0 or higher.
- Screen resolution: must be set to 600 x 800 pixels.
- At this time, access is not available via AOL or WebTV (we are working on providing AOL access)
3. Is remote access included for the subscription price? If there are additional charges or requirements in order to offer remote access, please describe. What methods of remote access are supported?
Remote access is included in the subscription price at no additional charge. Remote access can be provided through the subscribing institutions proxy server IP address and through referrer URLs.
4. Please discuss any methods or assistance you offer regarding remote access patron verification and authentication.
If the library has a library card authentication system, we can set up the account to recognize the library card number. On a proxy connection, the proxy server IP address is entered into our registration database, and any user coming through the proxy server will be accepted for access.
5. What end user delivery options, such as printing, emailing or faxing results, are available beyond just viewing results on the computer monitor?
Users are permitted to print and download material, and can e-mail or fax it within the terms of our license.
6. What customer training is provided, and at what cost?
We have designed our product interface to operate intuitively, and most of our customers have found it easy to use with no formal training. A Help button is available on every screen, and Help messages and User Tips provide on-screen suggestions for alternative searching techniques.
7. What customer and technical support is provided, including hours of operation.
Grove is committed to quality customer support. The products themselves provide easy-to-understand help screens that guide users to the content information they need.
For technical questions, subscribers can e-mail their questions to our technical support center, and will in most cases receive a reply within 24 hours. Our online customer support is available on a toll-free telephone number from 7 a.m. to 1 a.m. EST Monday through Friday, and from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. EST on weekends. Users can also connect to an extensive FAQ webpage that will answer most common technical questions.

8. Describe the statistics you provide, and discuss whether your statistical reporting complies with guidelines developed by the International Coalition of Library Consortia which may be found at www.library.yale.edu/consortia/webstats.html .
Both of the Grove online products were launched recently and our usage statistics reports are still in development. Our intention is to follow the guidelines established by the ICOLC as far as these are applicable to our products.
9. Describe your pricing structure or formula for the product. If there are additional costs for retrieving full text, describe the pricing for this service.
Academic Institutions are defined using Carnegie Classification list for both products.
Public Library: for The Grove Dictionary of Art Online, prices below apply to main library; additional cost for branches depends on degree of access desired.
Basic Usage level is 1-5 concurrent users. Prices for higher usage levels and multiple-year subscriptions are also available upon request.

Annual Subscription (1-5 concurrent users): $1,000 for owners of the print Dictionary of Art, $1,500 for non-print owners.
High School Libraries:

Annual Subscription (1-5 concurrent users): $2,000 for owners of the print Dictionary of Art; $2,500 for non-print owners.

10. What is the minimum participation level (however you care to define it) that would be needed to allow participating libraries to receive a discount? What is the minimum discount for a group buy? Please clarify how you would treat existing library customers with regard to a group buy.
Five libraries (over and above existing customers) is the minimum number for us to give a consortial discount. Our discount structure for an annual subscription is as follows:
