Its comprehensive database of current information contains articles, news summaries, broadcasts and transcripts from hundreds of international sources. Global NewsBank is ideal for researching a wide variety of international developments related to politics, economics, culture, business, science and technology and more. Global NewsBank facilitates international research by providing your library with a permanent, easily accessible collection of international information.

InfoWeb: KidsPage

Description: NewsBank InfoWeb KidsPage is a Web-based, 100% full-text primary information source that covers virtually all subject areas, addresses topics not contained in textbooks, and is updated daily. The subject areas best covered are language arts, social studies, science and math.

Through the use of colorful icons NewsBank InfoWeb KidsPage guides you through more than 200 topics with articles on each topic from newspapers and magazines. These topics complement textbook chapters, classroom themes and national/state/local curriculum frameworks.

The structure of NewsBank InfoWeb KidsPage is organic. Organized around a collection of themes, this structure helps generate a thirst for knowledge. The structure is designed to stimulate students' interest and to encourage them to first explore, then read a range of texts, to share information in a variety of formats to help them become better readers.

NewsBank InfoWeb KidsPage consists of a core of articles from kid's sections in newspapers and magazines for young readers, supported by a collection of online student projects/activities and teacher notes. KidsPage also contains almanac and encyclopedia coverage. The range of text types vary from very simple to complex material, which will in themselves, through the student's reading of them, teach something about reading, so that students will have many experiences of reading that link together.

The online collection of interactive projects, guide students to find out more about a specific topic, to share results in writing, to discuss them or to explore other resources by using Projects, Maps, and News Headlines as integral information resources while working on the project activities. Each project is related to major subject areas in NewsBank InfoWeb KidsPage.

Also included in the database are:

  • Maps (over 300) from all over the world
  • Project Tools to give students examples of specific skills they may need and to help them practice those skills online or from pages you can print.
  • Planning Notes for teachers or parents with background information on all of the components of NewsBank InfoWeb KidsPage.

InfoWeb: ScienceSource Collection

Description: ScienceSource Collection is an invaluable supplement to textbook-based science classes. With easy access to up-to-date information on the latest trends in the Sciences, your students learn how real world issues relate to the topics they are studying, making the learning process much more relevant and exciting. And as an educator, you know that excited students are motivated students.

With over 25,000 article summaries selected from over 225 scientific journals and magazines, NewsBank ScienceSource Collection is full of useful research information. Each article is selected based on both its research value and its benefit to science curriculums, then summarized to clarify complex concepts and simplify the research process, making them useful across a wide range of age groups and skill levels. These digests are one to two-page summaries of the original article, and are written in simple terms so that the information is understandable to a wide selection of users. Each digest includes all the pertinent information from the articles including methods, results and conclusions, and all scientific terms are explained in context for easy readability. NewsBank ScienceSource Collection is updated nine times a year with over 4,700 new summaries, meaning it provides immediate access to topics that will not appear in textbooks for years.

Description: StatBank is a unique on-line resource offering students and researchers instant access to a wealth of statistical information covering a wide array of topics and curriculum areas. StatBank saves users' time by consolidating frequently sought statistics from more than 250 validated sources and making them readily accessible via a powerful, easy-to-use Internet search engine. This comprehensive database contains over 1.6 million statistical items on a wide variety of topics, including: demographics, voting, environment, health, employment, and social issues. Beyond facts and figures, StatBank helps to paint a "quantitative portrait" of issues and trends, helping users gain deeper insight into prominent issues by supporting comparative analysis, critical thinking and problem solving.

This primary source information provides insight and perspective that perfectly complement traditional textbook accounts, literally bringing history alive through the voices of individuals who witnessed history in the making.

2. What are the hardware and software requirements for using all the features of the product(s)? 

All databases on the Washington State Fall Trial are searchable through the World Wide Web. The browser used to access the Internet sets the minimum hardware and software requirements. NewsBank recommends a modem speed of 28.8 or above, however, lower speed modems will still function. Below is a list of the browser requirements:

NewsBank InfoWeb will be fully functional for all users whose browsers and systems meet the MINIMUM requirements detailed in the chart below. Enhancements provided by meeting the RECOMMENDED requirements include additional browsing functions in our Customized Search area, increased viewing area (less scrolling required) and more easily accessible controls such as buttons, drop-down fields and dialog boxes.

      1. Although Microsoft Explorer 3.x doesn't allow for access to the full version of InfoWeb, it is still possible to use this version of the browser to perform searches. However, search field browsing (IE3, Macintosh) will not be available. To ensure that all of NewsBank InfoWeb features will function properly, install one of the "minimum" browsers listed above.
      2. America Online users: Be sure to follow the guidelines outlined in the chart above to ensure that NewsBank InfoWeb functions properly. Note that the latest version of America Online - version 4.0 - does not necessarily integrate a browser which meets these guidelines. Please contact America Online if you are uncertain about which AOL browser you are using.

3. Is remote access included for the subscription price?  If there are additional charges or requirements in order to offer remote access, please describe.   What methods of remote access are supported?

Due to publisher restrictions, remote access is available, at no additional charge, for students of an Academic Institution (2 & 4 Year Colleges/Universities) and a Public or Private School (Grades K to 12) only. Please see the answer to Question Number 4 below for what methods are supported.

4. Please discuss any methods or assistance you offer regarding remote access patron verification and authentication.

The method most commonly used for verification and authentication of remote access patrons is by the patron entering a user name and password. Where possible, IP Addresses or cookies can be used. Assistance is available from our Customer Service Support Desk (Please see the answer to Question Number 6 below for more details).

5. What end user delivery options, such as printing, emailing or faxing results, are available beyond just viewing results on the computer monitor?

Users are able to view, print and e-mail search results. Faxing can be supported through 3rd party software or services.

6. What customer training is provided, and at what cost?

NewsBank will provide training for new users via an On-line Tutorial at no charge. This downloadable training is available to all users on an unlimited basis. Additionally, each library will have access to our Customer Service Support Desk available at (800)243-7694 from 8:00 AM to 8:00 PM (EST). Our Customer Service Support desk is a full service department, whose phones are answered by a live person able to answer questions about the product, its use and for troubleshooting technical problems. Additionally, all of NewsBank’s products contain help screens on how to use, site and support the database. On-site training is available at an additional charge.

7. What customer and technical support is provided, including hours of operation.

NewsBank's Customer Service Support Desk is available at the number (800)243-7694 from 8:00 AM to 8:00 PM (EST) or via e-mail at [email protected]. All prices are based on the type of institution (Academic Library, Public Library or School Library), the size of the institution and the number of libraries within the institution. Pricing varies by product and by the institution size. The size of the institution is measured as follows:
