ABC-CLIO

Note from the Washington State Library: In order to participate in the Winter 2002 Washington State Databases Trial, each vendor was asked to address questions the Statewide Database Licensing Committee felt were most critical in order for library staff to evaluate products and vendors. Please contact the vendor's representative, listed below, for additional information on this product.

1. Describe the database product(s). If you want us to link to more than one product, provide a unique description for each product. Be sure we know what information belongs with each product. If there are special hardware or software needs, please make sure you include them in this description. When you provide a description of your product, please go beyond the typical advertising brochure text. We are hoping for a thoughtful, descriptive paragraph that will enable someone unfamiliar with your product to understand the nature and coverage of your product. The more concise the description, the better.

America: History and Life covers the history and culture of the United States and Canada from prehistoric times to the present. It provides complete bibliographic information and 75-125 word abstracts of the historical literature written from 1964 to the present. Covers journal articles, book/media reviews, and dissertations. Currently it does not include full-text coverage. This database on the web is updated monthly with new citations and entries. With an easy-to-use web interface, America: History and Life is created for undergraduates, researchers/scholars, and history buffs studying United States and Canadian history. Over 90% of the articles annotated were published originally in English-language journals; the foreign language coverage adds an international perspective to the topics and events covered.

Historical Abstracts covers the history of the world from 1450 to the present (excluding North America).
It provides complete bibliographic information and 75-125 word abstracts of world historical literature written from 1955 to the present. It includes journal articles and citations to books and dissertations. Currently it does not include full-text coverage. This database on the web is updated monthly with new citations and entries. With an easy-to-use web interface, Historical Abstracts is created for undergraduates and researchers/scholars studying world history. An emphasis is placed upon the inclusion of English-languages titles published throughout the world.

Both America: History and Life as well as Historical Abstracts now include the following:

Clio-Notes: Includes 22 key historical periods, assisted searching, and research topics.

Clio-Alert: A new "profiler" that alerts a scholar/professor via email when an abstract has been added to the database that pertains to their studies. An individual can set up to 10 separate profiles.

Simple-Search: A new search engine that is based off a "key-word" search. Due to the large amount of abstracts (approximately 1.2 million entries) this narrows the users searching field significantly.

Full Text Linking: Most importantly, the serials now link to approximately 80,000 full text JSTOR documents (upon the libraries' subscription to JSTOR Arts and Sciences I and II). We are currently working with other full text providers to complete further abstract coverage.

World History FullTEXT provides abstracts and the full-text of the articles abstracted found in approximately 100 history-related journal titles. This reference work is a co-branded history resource featuring selected abstracts from ABC-CLIO's history databases, America: History and Life and Historical Abstracts, with the full text of the articles from EBSCO Publishing. World History FullTEXT is updated quarterly and is available via EBSCOhost. Focusing on historical writing published from 1990 to the present, this resource provides a global view on historical research. It is ideal for institutions with general research needs that want broad access to the full text of the journal articles covered.

2. Is remote access included for the subscription price? If there are additional charges or requirements in order to offer remote access, please describe. What methods of remote access are supported? If applicable, please discuss any methods or assistance you offer regarding remote access patron verification and authentication.

America: History and Life and Historical Abstracts. Remote access is included in the subscription price. Methods of remote access supported include:

  • IP Address is currently the most popular method of access. The site provides ABC-CLIO with a range of valid IP addresses.
  • ID/Password distributed by the site to remote users.
  • ID/Password passed through the URL
  • ID/Password passed invisibly through a CGI script (ABC-CLIO does not provide the script, but can supply the code to integrate with the site's script)

World History FullTEXT: Remote access is included in the subscription price. It can be accessed by all of the options available for EBSCOhost - passwords or IP authentication.

3. What customer training is provided, and at what cost? Please include "freebies" such as Web-based tutorials, end-user documentation tents, cheat-sheets, etc.

America: History and Life and Historical Abstracts:
ABC-CLIO provides detailed web user guides (written in consultation with librarians) for each database. The guides are accessible from the actual database sites and corporate site. Additional customer training can be arranged, as needed.

World History FullTEXT:
Complimentary assistance for EBSCOhost includes: Quick Start Guides, a User Support Program of quick reference pieces and training tools, and a Reference Center with information for instructing end-users and librarians. Customized group and individual training sessions for using EBSCOhost are available, if needed. In addition, The EBSCO_web listserv details ways in which products may be used by various libraries.

4. What customer and technical support is provided, including hours of operation? In your reply, please include contact names (if applicable) or name of department, the phone numbers and e-mail addresses for your support services. If you have toll-free access to these support centers, please make sure they are available here.

6. Describe your pricing structure or formula for the product. If there are additional costs for retrieving full text, describe the pricing for this service. (Note: This question means - we want to know what your list prices are and how you calculate your prices: Based on FTEs? On buildings? On a combination, or on something else?)

If you cannot provide a standard price list that would enable each library to understand their cost to subscribe, then for each product you must tell us the list price that you would charge these hypothetical libraries.
a. Library A: A high school library with 750 students in grades 9-12
b. Library B: A public library that serves a population of 100,000 and has two branches
c. Library C: A public library that serves a population of 20,000 and has only one building, no branches
d. Library D: A community college library serving 5,000 full-time equivalent students
e. Library E: A four-year academic library serving 5,000 full-time equivalent students
f. Library F: A hospital library serving a hospital that employees 1,000 staff plus has 200 doctors attached to the hospital

America: History and Life and Historical Abstracts:
Our pricing structure is based on the number of simultaneous users and the materials budget of the institution. An institution with a materials budget (including books, serials, and bindings) of less than $300,000 qualifies for our small college rate. High school pricing is the same as community colleges. The following table shows our standard pricing for each database.
