Note from the Washington State Library: In order to participate in the
Winter 2002 Washington State Databases Trial, each vendor was asked to
address questions the Statewide Database Licensing Committee felt were
most critical in order for library staff to evaluate products and vendors.
Please contact the vendor's representative, listed below, for additional
information on this product.
1. Describe the database product(s).
If you want us to link to more than one product, provide a unique description
for each product. Be sure we know what information belongs with each product.
If there are special hardware or software needs, please make sure you include
them in this description. When you provide a description of your product, please
go beyond the typical advertising brochure text. We are hoping for a thoughtful,
descriptive paragraph that will enable someone unfamiliar with your product
to understand the nature and coverage of your product. The more concise the
description, the better.

2. Is remote access included for
the subscription price? If there are additional charges or requirements in order
to offer remote access, please describe. What methods of remote access are supported?
If applicable, please discuss any methods or assistance you offer regarding
remote access patron verification and authentication.
Remote access is included in the subscription price. The following
methods of remote authentication are available: validation of library
cards/bar codes, HTMO referrer, proxy server links, and password/id's.
Library patron barcode or ID accesses the library system as a gateway
to WilsonWeb access. The authentication would occur before the patron
is passed through the gateway on the library system side of the process.
Then the library's IP address, or a range of IP address, would be used
to authorize incoming search requests. Alternatively, if the library
has a secure Web page, the IP address of the Web page could be used
to authorize incoming search requests.
Proxy Server as described below:
Library Web page access: WilsonWeb allows access through the library's
web page. The IP address of the library's web page would be used to
authorize access of incoming search requests. The library would be responsible
for authenticating users who access the library's web page i.e., the
library would have a secure web page.
Library system access: WilsonWeb can be accessed by libraries with
local automated library systems. This could be accomplished by setting
up the OPAC system to be a gateway. In a possible scenario, the OPAC
menu would display an option for WilsonWeb. When a user selects the
option, the OPAC system accesses a scripted file that would start up
a Netscape application. The ID/PW required for access to the WilsonWeb
would be included in the script file so the use would not be aware of
it. Alternatively, an IP address of the library's server could be registered
for authorized access.
3. What customer training is provided,
and at what cost? Please include "freebies" such as Web-based tutorials,
end-user documentation tents, cheat-sheets, etc.
WilsonWeb has been designed to present the user interface with clear,
concise screen displays in a graphical, Windows or Windows-like format.
The WilsonWeb search engine provides simple, command oriented searching.
These features, in addition to the context sensitive help, which is
available at any point in a search, mean that minimal instruction or
documentation is needed for an end user to execute a successful search.
Besides WilsonWeb's user friendly interface, extensive help messages
are imbedded in the product. In addition, a "Quick Reference Guide"
(QRG) is resident on the Wilson Home Page. The QRG provides instructions
and documentation on the basic features of WilsonWeb. It is updated
frequently and has been designed for easy downloading to a local workstation.
The QRG information is also available in an abbreviated format on a
card for use beside the workstation and would be an ideal accompaniment
to a training session.
Finally, tech support can answer questions regarding searching and
functionality of the WilsonWeb software. This support and those listed
above are provided at no charge.
4. What customer and technical support
is provided, including hours of operation? In your reply, please include contact
names (if applicable) or name of department, the phone numbers and e-mail addresses
for your support services. If you have toll-free access to these support centers,
please make sure they are available here.
Technical support is available 24 hours/ day, 7 days/ week.
Wilson offers a variety of options to facilitate effective technical
support:
via a toll free number: customers can call 800/367-6770 at all hours
via e-mail: WilsonWeb feedback link on the service or e-mail questions
to [email protected].
In addition, Wilson's interactive technical support on the
web provides fast answers to questions about WilsonWeb and WILSONDISC.
Customers can consult a database of Frequently Asked Questions or submit
their own inquiries at the following address: http://hwwtechnicalsupport.com
Wilson's technical support reps post answers by the next business day
and then follow up with a phone call or e-mail contact to ensure that
the issue has been addressed to the customer's satisfaction.
5. Please describe the statistics you provide,
and discuss whether your statistical reporting complies in part or in
whole with the guidelines developed by the International Coalition of
Library Consortia found at http://www.library.yale.edu/consortia/webstats.html
The current version of the WilsonWeb report is in substantial compliance
with the ICOLC guidelines. The new release of WilsonWeb technology will
significantly expand statistical reporting, and the goal of that release
is to be in full compliance with the ICOLC guidelines.
The current WilsonWeb report includes the name of the institution,
number of searches and number of records downloaded, by database, for
the current month, last month, and year-to-date. WilsonWeb also tracks
the number of logins and we could integrate this element into the report
if desired.
WilsonWeb reports can currently be produced
by database
by community of interest entity-defined IP addresses
by community of interest type and by total of all community
of interest types
by special element passed by community of interest entity
by time period
Wilson can compile comparative statistics as desired by participating
entities or communities of interest types.
Data is collected by the ERL (data) server then merged with customer
data by account. The data is processed by the Information Systems department.
Presently the available reports are generated by the company and provided
to customers in hard-copy format or via email. Wilson can also provides
access to an institution's report via ID/Password authorization so that
libraries can generate their reports on demand.
The new WilsonWeb technology, scheduled for release in mid 2002, will
include significant upgrades in statistical reporting, including peak-usage,
time-of-day reporting, and reporting of usage at the journal and article
level. A user-controlled statistics utility is also planned so customers
can obtain statistics at their convenience and design customized reports
in the process.
6. Describe
your pricing structure or formula for the product. If there are additional
costs for retrieving full text, describe the pricing for this service.
(Note: This question means - we want to know what your list prices are
and how you calculate your prices: Based on FTEs? On buildings? On a combination,
or on something else?)
If you cannot provide a standard price list that
would enable each library to understand their cost to subscribe, then
for each product you must tell us the list price that you would charge
these hypothetical libraries.
a. Library A: A high school library with 750 students
in grades 9-12
b. Library B: A public library that serves a population of 100,000 and
has two branches
c. Library C: A public library that serves a population of 20,000 and
has only one building, no branches
d. Library D: A community college library serving 5,000 full-time equivalent
students
e. Library E: A four-year academic library serving 5,000 full-time equivalent
students
f . Library F: A hospital library serving a hospital that employees 1,000
staff plus has 200 doctors attached to the hospital
There is no additional cost for retrieving full text. Our pricing structure
is based on number of site(s) and number of simultaneous users. A chart
of pricing by simultaneous user and by market is provided. The chart
is based on one site. Network pricing and shared user pricing is available
upon request.
