Not to be left out, close to 95% of all public libraries in Washington State will have an app for mobile phones by the end of this year thanks to an exciting new tool from the Washington State Library (WSL). Want to know more? Mark your calendars now for Tuesday, December 10, 2013, when WSL’s Will Stuivenga will tell you how Library Now for Libraries will enable patrons to connect to all of the web-accessible resources at their libraries. Two sessions will be available for this presentation:

  • 9:00 – 10:00 a.m. PST;
  • 2:00 – 3:00 p.m. PST.
To register, go to sos.wa.gov/q/LNow. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 2) WANT TO HOST A GADGET MENAGERIE? Staff from Library Development at WSL will be hitting the road beginning in January with a new Gadget Menagerie (aka Technology Petting Zoo) that will include (subject to availability) Kindles, Nooks, Galaxy Tablets, iPads, a Microsoft Surface, and a Chromebook. Please note that this collection cannot be loaned out and that WSL staff will need to be with the petting zoo at all times. Interactive training sessions will be available for library staff and patrons, who are welcome to bring their own devices. Staff training will be offered in 3-hour sessions; patron training (available for libraries that are hosting staff trainings) will consist of sessions 1 – 2 hours in length. Library staff attending training will learn how to help patrons with their devices including how to download books from the library. Staff and patrons attending training will:
  • Find out how various eReaders, tablets and other devices work;
  • Discover the similarities and differences among various devices;
  • Learn basic troubleshooting;
  • Acquire tips for getting the most out of devices.
WSL would like to group trainings geographically whenever possible. Staff training is best with 8-15 participants, so larger libraries may want to plan multiple sessions with smaller groups. This project is funded by WSL via the Institute for Museum and Library Services (IMLS) through the Library Services and Technology Act (LSTA). --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 3) CALL FOR PRESENTERS – HANDHELD LIBRARIAN 9 Handheld Librarian 9 (HHLib 9) will be holding its next conference, Encouraging Innovation and Technology, from February 26 – 27, 2014. LearningTimes invites librarians, library staff, vendors, graduate students, and developers to submit program proposals for this interactive online conference, which will cover a broad range of topics relating to innovative library services. Submissions should highlight current, evolving, and future issues in library services and can be about:
  • Your most innovative ideas;
  • Your most innovative projects;
  • Super successes and super failures;
  • Super plans;
  • What was learned from your success or failure.
For additional information and to submit your proposal, go to nine.handheldlibrarian.org. Proposals are due by Wednesday, December 11, 2013. Conference registration fees will be waived for speakers. Information about conference registration will be available in early December. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 4) FUNDING FOR INNOVATIVE RESEARCH The ALA’s Office for Research and Statistics is now accepting applications for the Carroll Preston Baber Research Grant. Up to $3,000 will be awarded to one or more librarians or library educators who conduct innovative research that could lead to an improvement in services to any specified group of people. Projects that involve both a practicing librarian and a researcher are especially welcome. Eligible projects should aim to answer a question that is national in scope and of vital importance to the library community. The following criteria are considered in making the award:
  • Originality of the research question(s);
  • Innovative quality of the project and/or use of technology in a new way;
  • Cooperative nature of the project;
  • Institutional commitment to the project.
Applicants must be members of ALA. Deadline for submissions is Wednesday, January 8, 2014. For additional information and to apply, go to sos.wa.gov/q/babercarroll. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 5) SUBSIDIES FOR LSSC CANDIDATES The American Library Association-Allied Profession Association (ALA-APA) will be offering subsidies of $200 each to 90 candidates to help them complete their Library Support Staff Certification (LSSC). Subsidies may be used for an LSCC-approved course in which candidates are currently enrolled as of November 25, 2013, or for any LSSC-approved course that ends before April 25, 2014. If the cost of the course is less than $200, the subsidy will cover the cost of the entire course minus materials such as books, etc. All LSSC candidates are eligible to receive a subsidy, but ALA-APA will give first preference to those who would be first-time recipients. To be eligible, applicants must be enrolled in the LSSC Program no later than Monday, December 23, 2013.
