MAYDAY! 5) BOOKS FOR CHILDREN GRANTS 6) FREE CE OPPORTUNITIES NEXT WEEK --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 1) APPLY FOR DIGITAL LITERACY GRANTS Are you ready to innovate in your community? Would your library like to:

  • Hold a community-wide tech fair?
  • Teach computer classes to senior citizens?
  • Recruit teen volunteers to help teach tech classes at the library?
  • Implement a video production lab with the latest technology?
If so, apply now for a Digital Literacy Grant from WSL. The purpose of this grant cycle is to help libraries implement projects that focus on digital literacy skills and resources. Projects should meet at least one of the following objectives:
  • Encourage the development of skills required to communicate and perform business transactions in a digital environment;
  • Use diverse technologies appropriately to retrieve quality information;
  • Support the development of skills to collaborate with others or to enhance employability in a digital and evolving world.
Digital Literacy grant applicants are urged to utilize project partners such as non-profits, hospitals, credit unions, and local businesses. But don’t delay – applications must be postmarked or hand delivered by Friday, April 18, 2014. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 2) OPEN GOVERNMENT AND PUBLIC LIBRARIES With support from the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS), the Center for Technology in Government (CTG) is leading a project to help define what roles public libraries play in open government within their local communities. As part of this project and in partnership with an advisory committee of public library, information and library science, and open government experts, CTG has developed a concept paper titled “Enabling Open Government for All: A planning framework for public libraries.” CTG is now seeking broad input on this preliminary framework. Sponsored by Internet@Schools magazine, the track, to be held from October 27 – 28, 2014, will cover technology, tools, trends, and practical topics. If you are running an innovative program through your school library or media/technology center that is helping your students learn or your colleagues teach, or if you are willing to share your practical tips, tools, or techniques about using technology and the internet in schools, Internet Librarian wants you! Just think about your latest success stories or technology ventures, and go to sos.wa.gov/q/IL2014Schools to submit your proposal. If successful, you receive a 60% discount off the full price of registration. The deadline for proposals for Internet@Schools is Wednesday, April 9, 2014. Note: If you have already submitted a proposal on a K-12 topic (March 7 deadline), you do not need to resubmit it. MAYDAY! Every year, Heritage Preservation encourages libraries, museums, archives, historical societies, and preservation organizations to set aside May 1 to participate in MayDay, a national effort to prepare for disasters. Heritage Preservation is collecting examples of creative but practical measures to prepare for an emergency. Share a brief description of your organization’s 2014 MayDay plans or accomplishments by Saturday, May 31, 2014, and you will be entered in a drawing for disaster supplies donated by Gaylord Brothers. Any organization can participate in MayDay by setting aside some time to do one simple thing to become more prepared. To participate, consider doing at least one of the following activities:
  • Updating your institution’s disaster plan;
  • If you don’t have a plan, make a deadline for developing one;
  • Give a tour of your building and collections to your local firefighters and police;
  • Update your staff emergency contact information;
  • Make sure your building is safe – eliminate hazards such as boxes and furniture in hallways, blocked fire exits, or improper storage of paints and solvents.
To find more ideas and to participate in MayDay, visit heritagepreservation.org/mayday. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 5) BOOKS FOR CHILDREN GRANTS The Libri Foundation is a nationwide non-profit organization that donates new, quality, hardcover children’s books to small, rural public libraries throughout the United States. The Foundation is currently accepting applications for its 2014 BOOKS FOR CHILDREN grants. To encourage and reward local support of libraries, The Libri Foundation will match any amount of money raised by local sponsors from $200 to $350 on a 2-to-1 ratio. Thus, a library can receive up to $1,050 worth of new children’s books. After a library receives a grant, local sponsors (such as formal or informal Friends groups, civic or social organizations, local businesses, etc.) have 4 months, or longer if necessary, to raise the matching funds. The books donated through the BOOKS FOR CHILDREN program are used for storytelling; toddler, preschool, and after-school programs; summer reading programs; “book buddy” programs in which older children read to younger children; holiday programs; teacher check-out and curriculum support; early childhood development programs; school projects; and just to provide children with a “good read.” The next deadline for BOOKS FOR CHILDREN grants is Thursday, May 15, 2014.
