Walla Walla Public Library is the proud recipient of CrewSpace, an innovative program that enables teens to learn the art of filmmaking. At the next First Tuesdays program, Jeffrey Townsend, CrewSpace at Walla Walla Public Library filmmaker, who worked with Walla Walla’s teens, will share information on the project and its effect on the community. Designed as a continuing education opportunity for staff of libraries in Washington State, this free web presentation, which will take place on May 6, 2014, from 9:00 to 10:00 a.m. PDT, lets attendees share their skills and successes and learn about new topics. For instructions on joining the presentation, visit sos.wa.gov/q/FirstTuesdays. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 2) PRESERVATION WEEK 2014 AT THE UW Preservation Week 2014 is almost here. During Preservation Week, libraries all over the country present events, activities, and resources that highlight what we can do, individually and together, to preserve our personal and shared collections. The University of Washington Libraries will be hosting the following events as part of the celebration:

  • April 29: Low-Cost Ways to Preserve Family Archives;
  • May 1: Preserving Scrapbooks.
Both workshops will be held from 11:00 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. PDT in the Allen Auditorium of the UW Suzzallo and Allen Library. For more information and directions, go to sos.wa.gov/q/UWPW2014. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 3) IMLS FUNDING PRIORITIES 2014 The Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS) supports the work of libraries to meet the nation’s growing demands for digital content. A key strategic priority of IMLS is to promote access to digitized collections to facilitate discovery of knowledge and cultural heritage. To help map out future directions for a national digital platform, IMLS will be holding three convenings for libraries and archives to discuss key needs, gaps, opportunities, and goals to consider in furthering national digital initiatives. IMLS will release a revised National Leadership Grant application this summer that will reflect the priorities identified during these meetings. Although the first convening will be held face-to-face in New York City, IMLS invites broad participation via a live webcast. Library professionals and the public are also encouraged to participate through social media using the Twitter hashtag #imlsfocus. Webcast information: Future meetings are scheduled for the following dates:
  • May 15 – Learning spaces in libraries;
  • June 5 – STEM learning.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 4) GET OUTSIDE THE BOX Developed and funded by Redbox, and managed by OCLC in partnership with Project for Public Spaces, Outside the Box is an innovative program that brings people together for free, fun entertainment events in their local communities. When people connect, communities benefit—and as trusted community anchors, public libraries are central to Outside the Box efforts. Program participants will create a shared community space and hold an initial kickoff event at the site, to introduce it as a gathering place for the community. Some examples of this work include:
  • Converting an unused, grassy stretch of land outside the library into a small park, with benches and shade umbrellas, where people can read or visit outdoors;
  • Turning a library parking lot into a public market space for weekend use;
  • Using a park adjoining the library for community concerts or public storytelling events.
Participants selected for Outside the Box will receive:
  • Consultation and support from OCLC and Project for Public Spaces on event and space design, event planning, and material selection;
  • Selection of up to $5000 in reusable materials provided by Redbox.

In partnership with the University of Pennsylvania Libraries, the Conservation Center for Art & Historic Artifacts (CCAHA) has launched a series of free, printable posters picturing key preservation terms and guidelines in a format that's easy to understand. Museums, libraries, historic sites, and other cultural heritage institutions and organizations are free to use the posters in presentations and on the web to let members, visitors, and donors know how important preservation is to the longevity of collections.
