The city of Ocean Shores is facing a budget deficit of $824,000 for next year. The mayor suggests that the only way to bring balance is for nine layoffs from several city departments, including one of the four staff positions at the library. Citizens defended certain departments from the need for cuts. The mayor said that raising certain fees might save as much as $192,000, which could save four positions, not including the one at the library. (The Daily World [Aberdeen], 11-11-08)

“A grand opening celebration for the remodeled Newport Public Library (Pend Oreille County Library) will be held Wednesday Nov. 12 at noon at the library.” (Newport Miner, 11-12-08)

Letters and Editorials:

A letter writer calls the Timberland Regional Library System “a treasure” and “the best I have ever encountered. The idea of operating a vast multicounty system is brilliant, cost effective, and efficient.” (The Olympian, 11-15-08)

Programs and Displays:

“The Liberty Lake Municipal Library is hosting a ‘Twilight’ movie opening party from 6 to 8 pm, Nov. 20 with activities, trivia, book discussion, and a craft. Two tickets to the movie will be given away.” Also, children are invited to the after-school program at the library on Tuesdays and Wednesdays. “Six veterans who served their country over the course of seven decades will share stories about their military service at a forum Sunday at the Anacortes Public Library. ‘It needs to be talked about, especially on Veterans Day’” said one. (Anacortes American, 11-05-08)
