“To make best use of staff and reduce operating costs, new hours and days of operation will be in effect at the Deming and Maple Falls branches of the Whatcom County Library System.” (Lynden Tribune, 12-24-08)

“The Fort Vancouver Regional Library District is facing loss of one-sixth of its budget and each branch is losing hours and personnel, effective Feb. 1.” (The Skamania Pioneer [Stevenson], 12-24-08)

Construction plans for a new Kenmore Branch of the King County Library System are dependent upon a new building being found for the U.S. Post Office now occupying the site. Budget concerns at the Post Office are making the prior expectation of a move somewhat uncertain, and the Post Office holds a lease on the present building until 2011. Buildings:

Due to a delay in the delivery date of construction materials, the Sequim Branch of the North Olympic Library System will now close Jan. 19 for its renovation project, re-opening in mid-March. (The Sequim Gazette, 12-24-08)

An article describes the library and tutoring activities at the Buena Branch of the Yakima Valley Libraries. Supporters of the library hope for success in a campaign that will move the library from its present trailer location into a larger new building. Letters and Editorials:

A Vancouver editorial praises the design and features of the new Vancouver Community Library. Construction should begin in late summer. (Columbian [Vancouver], 12-29-08)

A letter writer is worried about the possibility of no parking being available at the new Vancouver Library (FVRL) since the planned underground garage is part of the privately funded portion of the site. (Columbian [Vancouver], 12-21-08) FVRL director Bruce Ziegman answers that while the garage may be delayed, the library will insure that there is adequate free parking nearby, with an accessible book drop. Two letter writers object to the use of so much glass in the Vancouver Community Library design; an architect responds that this strategic use of glass is energy-efficient. (Columbian [Vancouver], 12-18, 22, & 27-08)

People:

Two new board members have been appointed to fill upcoming vacancies on the Pend Oreille County Library District Board of Trustees, with Dave Livingston and Nancy Svoboda replacing Bettie Perry and Pat Weeks. (Newport Miner, 12-24-08)

Claire Murphy, new branch manager of the Bonney Lake Library (Pierce County Library System), is introduced and interviewed. (Bonney Lake & Lake Tapps Courier Herald, 12-24-08)

Orcas Island Library Board member PierretteGuimond is leaving the board after a four-year term. A selection committee is considering applicants for the position. (The Island Sounder [Eastsound], 12-24-08)

The Friends of the Liberty Lake Municipal Library group is extending an invitation to new members. (Liberty Lake Splash, 12-25-08)

Programs and Displays:

The Colfax Branch of the Whitman County Library will be hosting free exercise and yoga classes on Monday and Wednesday nights, introducing different styles of yoga. (Moscow-Pullman Daily News, 12-31-08)

The Walla Walla Public Library hosted the Downtown Walla Walla Foundation’s annual Starbucks Reading Room, with free books, drafts, and hot chocolate.”An hour into the event, all the hot chocolate had been consumed, so more was ordered, and more than a hundred books had been given away.” Publicity flyers distributed by the Toys for Tots campaign had reached some families who had been unfamiliar with the library. The Soap Lake Library (North Central Regional Library) hosted special board game gatherings during the holidays, as well as a “It’s Your CHOICE Book Story hour”. (Grant County Journal [Ephrata], 12-23-08)

An article on the Timberland Regional Library’s Adult Winter Reading program describes possible prizes, and reminds that most branches have a Readers’ Advisory Area where people can leave comments and reviews on books they have been reading. (Olympian, 12-26-08)
