The conference is September 11-13 (preconference on Sept. 10) in Gatlinburg, Tennessee. Scholarships are supported with funding from the Library Services Technology Act (LSTA). Applicants must work at a small and rural library in Washington State, and preference is given to those who have not attended an ARSL conference in the last 5 years. To apply, or for more information, please contact Kirsten Furl at [email protected] 360-570-5576 or toll free 866-538-4996. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 2) WORKSHOP – MANAGING OTHERS IN TIGHT TIMES How to Manage Others during Tight Times and Changing Trends is a workshop offered by the SAM (Supervisors, Administrators and Managers) interest group of WLA, featuring Cyndi Schaeffer from Edmonds Community College. This one day session prepares supervisors and managers to lead work activities and staff during organizational changes and during tight times. Most managers are not prepared how to deal with human factor issues and don’t know how to effectively manage others during change. This training is very interactive and engaging. These workshops are from 9:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. with dates and locations as follows:

September 8, 2009: Sno-Isle Libraries Service Center, Marysville
September 9, 2009: Pierce County Library System Service Center, Tacoma
September 24, 2009: North Central Regional Library Distribution Center, Wenatchee

Columbia County Rural Library District
Denny Ashby Library (Pomeroy, WA)
Ellensburg Public Library
Metalines Community Library (Pend Oreille County Library District)

These grants are part of the Washington Rural Heritage 2009/2010 fiscal year subgrant cycle that will end August 13, 2010. Funds were made available by a grant from the Institute of Museum and Library Services. Picturing America School Collaboration Projects can receive up to $75,000 in outright funds for projects involving one or more conferences. The grant period will be twelve months. Program staff recommends that draft proposals (optional) be submitted no later than August 26, 2009. Time constraints may prevent staff from reviewing draft proposals submitted after that date. Final applications must be received by Grants.gov on or before October 7, 2009. For additional information visit: www.neh.gov/grants/guidelines/pascp.html --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 5) FINRA UNEMPLOYMENT RESOURCE AVAILABLE Public libraries can take advantage of financial and unemployment-related information developed by the Financial Industry Regulatory Authority (FINRA) and administered by ALA's Reference and User Services Association (RUSA). FINRA's Investor Alert, "Job Dislocation: Making Smart Financial Choices after a Job Loss," offers guidance and tips for the general public on maintaining financial stability during a period of unemployment. Available online in English and Spanish, the brochure is available to public libraries in the spirit of "Smart Investing @ your library," the ongoing grant initiative managed as a partnership between RUSA and the FINRA Investor Education Foundation.
