Twittering: Frittering or Fabulous with Nancy White is the title for the September 6, 2011, First Tuesdays program from the State Library. With seemingly endless opportunities to try yet another social medial tool, how do we assess the value of any one of them? Join Nancy White, of Full Circle Associates, as she uses Twitter as a case study to experiment and develop practical assessment approaches. First Tuesdays is a free, online, monthly presentation from the Washington State Library, held from 9:00 – 10:00 a.m. on the first Tuesday of each month. For more information, visit www.sos.wa.gov/quicklinks/tuesdays. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 3) REGISTER NOW FOR VOLUNTEER ENGAGEMENT WORKSHOPS Baby Boomers and the generations that follow are seeking new ways to use their skills and experience to make a difference in their communities. Multiple studies have shown that Boomer interests in volunteering are vastly different from those of current “senior volunteers,” and that organizations seeking to recruit them will need to adjust their volunteer engagement practices. Successful Volunteer Engagement Strategies for Libraries: Capturing the Talent of Baby Boomers and the Generations that Follow, presented by Carla Lehn of The Lehn Group, will show participants how to start or “re-tool” a volunteer engagement program that will not only capture the talents of these potential volunteers, but will reap the benefits of ongoing support for the library that comes from meaningfully engaging Boomers. This course will provide tools, techniques, resources, and models such that participants will be able to:

Understand the potential for engaging high impact, skilled volunteers from the Baby Boom generation and those that follow;
Engage this talent to extend the library’s capacity in the community and to benefit from these new library advocates and supporters;
Understand motivations in order to create diverse, meaningful, and skilled positions to attract a broad range of community volunteers;
Implement the elements of a successful volunteer engagement program;
Address potential barriers such as union issues and staff resistance;
Understand current trends and issues in volunteer engagement, including online recruitment and legal issues.

Friday, October 7, 2011, Washington Talking Book & Braille Library, Seattle.

Preparing for emergencies saves lives and mitigates damage. Take the time now to help your institution to be ready! There is still time to register for a free 2-part disaster preparedness and response workshop, Protecting Cultural Collections: Prevention, Preparedness, Response & Recovery, offered by the Western States and Territories Preservation Assistance Service (WESTPAS). This workshop is part of a coordinated regional approach to raising awareness about disaster planning for collecting institutions throughout the Western United States and will help participants to:

Complete an institutional disaster plan for their collections by the end of Part 2;
Learn how to train staff to implement the plan effectively;
Set pre- and post-disaster action priorities for collections;
Learn how to use practical decision-making skills during an emergency;
Get hands-on practice in salvage procedures for books, documents, and non-print media.
