As of January 1, 2012, ProQuest lost the rights to its McClatchy newspaper titles, which included the Tacoma News-Tribune, and the Tri-Cities Herald. Content from the online SeattlePI.com is no longer available as well. In compensation, ProQuest will be upgrading the Washington Newsstand to its “Western Newsstand” product, which includes approximately 130 titles from the entire western half of the United States, with newspapers from a number of states, such as Alaska, California, Arizona, and even Oklahoma. This additional content should be made available to Washington libraries on Thursday, July 12, 2012. POPULATION ESTIMATES AVAILABLE NOW RCW 43.62.030 states that the Office of Financial Management (OFM) of the state of Washington shall annually determine the April 1 populations of all cities and towns of the state. OFM population estimates for cities and towns are used in state program administration and in the allocation of selected state revenues (RCW 43.62.020). Population estimates for counties are used to allocate revenues as specified in RCW 36.13.100 and RCW 43.62.030. You don’t have time to wade through a lot of research. And you need reliable information – a Google search may return thousands of hits – some reputable, others less so. The Connecting to Collections Online Community can help smaller museums, libraries, archives, and historical societies get answers to collections care questions and quickly locate reliable preservation resources and to help staff members network with their colleagues. Resources include:

  • Links to preservation information from leading conservators;
  • Archived presentations on preservation topics;
  • Community discussions.

Stay connected with Programming Librarian, an online resource center for all things related to presenting cultural programs for all types and sizes of libraries. Funded by a grant from the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS) to ALA’s Public Programs Office, the site includes a library equipped with topical information, such as advocacy and fundraising, as well as events and celebrations you can use to develop your programming calendar. A blog provides timely information such as grant announcements. To explore Programming Librarian, visit www.programminglibrarian.org. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 5) CIVIL WAR 150 GRANT DEADLINE EXTENDED The Gilder Lehrman Institute of American History, in partnership with The Library of America, has extended the deadline on a rolling basis for applications for grants to support public programming around the free traveling panel exhibition “Civil War 150.” The exhibition is part of Civil War 150: Exploring the War and Its Meaning through the Words of Those Who Lived It, a major three-year project funded by the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH). The project is centered on the four-volume Library of America series, The Civil War Told by Those Who Lived It, and includes a collection of readers (discussion guides) drawn from the series. Fifty sites selected by competitive application to host the exhibition will each be awarded a grant of $1,000 to plan accompanying public programming. The exhibition is available for three-week periods from October 2012 to March 2015. Hosting sites will also receive supporting interpretive and contextual materials, including the “Civil War 150” readers and access to a multimedia website with robust digital resources. Public, academic, and special libraries are invited to submit applications for the public programming grants and exhibition. Applicants will automatically be considered for $500 “Civil War 150” Public Programming Grants that will be distributed to 150 sites nationwide. Applications are now being accepted through Monday, July 23, 2012 on a rolling basis.
