This year you will be able to view them wherever you are with free Elections Results apps for iPhone and Android phones, developed by the Washington Office of the Secretary of State. The apps provide current vote totals for state, federal, legislative, and judicial offices, giving users a convenient way to stay up to date on their favorite races. County elections departments begin tabulating ballots that have been received and processed shortly after the polls close at 8:00, and within minutes you can start to view results. Downloading the free app is as simple as searching for “WA State Election Results” in the app store from your iPhone. It is also available from iTunes by going to www.sos.wa.gov/quicklinks/ituneapp. The Android app is available through Google Play and can be downloaded by going to www.sos.wa.gov/quicklinks/androidapp. And while we’re on the topic of apps, the WSL Ask-WA app, which provides every Washington State resident access to a live librarian, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, is also available for free at Google Play and from ask.wa.gov. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 3) IS YOUR LIBRARY BUSINESS-FRIENDLY? --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 4) ONLINE COURSE – FUNDAMENTALS OF PRESERVATION Do you need to know more about preservation? Is traveling to a training site problematic? Learn the basics of preservation by attending the four-week online course, Fundamentals of Preservation, presented by ALCTS (the Association for Library Collections & Technical Services), a division of ALA. Designed to inform all staff, across divisions and departments and at all levels of responsibility, this course will introduce participants to the principles, policies, and practices of preservation in libraries and archives. This course is one-third of the Collection Management Elective course approved by the Library Support Staff Certification Program (LSSCP). Course components will cover:
  • Preservation as a formal library function, and how it reflects and supports the institutional mission;
  • The primary role of preventive care, including good storage conditions, emergency planning, and careful handling of collections;
  • The history and manufacture of physical formats and how this affects preservation options;
  • Standard methods of care and repair, as well as reformatting options;
  • Challenges in preserving digital content and what the implications are for the future of scholarship.

Great Websites for Kids, sponsored by the Association for Library Service to Children (ALSC), a division of ALA, is a compilation of exemplary websites geared to children from birth to age 14 selected by members of ALSC. Newly evaluated and accepted sites are added to the database three times a year, and all sites are reviewed twice a year to guarantee that they are still relevant, appropriate, and accessible.
