Volume 8, September 13, 2012 for the WSL Updates mailing list Topics include: 1) BE A VOICE FOR LIBRARIES 2) CATCH THE EARLY BIRD – REGISTER NOW FOR WALE 2012 3) BE INSPIRED – REGISTER NOW FOR “LIBRARIES OUT LOUD” 4) WORLD BOOK NIGHT 2013 5) APPLY NOW FOR 2013 NATIONAL LIBRARY WEEK GRANT 6) FREE CE OPPORTUNITIES NEXT WEEK --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 1) BE A VOICE FOR LIBRARIES The Library Council of Washington (LCW) advises the State Librarian and the Office of the Secretary of State on statewide library issues and the expenditure of federal LSTA funding. The LCW meets four times a year. Meetings are held throughout the state in different types of libraries, or online. Travel reimbursement is provided in accordance with state travel regulations. Applications are currently being accepted for the following four positions on the Council:

Information Technology: represents the broad spectrum of information technology needs and issues in all types of libraries;
Public Libraries serving over 100,000 persons: represents the needs and issues of larger public libraries in the state;
Rural Libraries: represents the needs and issues of rural library service;
School Libraries: represents the needs and issues of K-12 school libraries.

Applications must be postmarked by Friday, September 21, 2012, to be considered. The term for all of these positions is anticipated to begin in January 2013. Curious about what makes teen brains tick? Ever thought of holding community baby showers in your library? Want to know more about outreach to teens and elders? Using open-source software? Writing grants? Easy Readers? This is just a sampling of the wide range of topics covered at the 2012 WALE Conference, Coming of Age. Pre-conference sessions include how to troubleshoot problems on a Windows PC, and basic and advanced book repair. Conference information:

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 3) BE INSPIRED – REGISTER NOW FOR “LIBRARIES OUT LOUD” We live in interesting times. From experts, pundits, and next-door neighbors, we hear that the future of academic libraries is uncertain, that the future of higher education itself is uncertain, and that libraries in general are in crisis. Faced with this narrative, it is tempting to change who we are and what we do in order to remain relevant, and to demonstrate our value to our schools and communities. We must realize, however, that it is precisely who we are – and who we have always been – that makes us even more relevant and valuable in the face of changing times. Our tools, techniques, and buildings may have changed, but our core identity remains. We must not change who we are; we need only change how we communicate our value. Come to the ACRL (Association of College and Research Libraries) Oregon & Washington Joint Fall Conference 2012, Libraries Out Loud: New Narratives of Enduring Values and join the conversation about the value and importance of academic libraries in these interesting times. You’ll leave energized, inspired, and with some good ideas about new ways to share your library’s story.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 4) WORLD BOOK NIGHT 2013 World Book Night (WBN) 2013 is a celebration of literacy by publishers, bookstores, libraries, and individuals who love books and reading. On World Book Night 2013 (April 23, 2013), 25,000 “book givers” will each give away 20 copies of a specially-printed, not-for-resale WBN edition of a book they have read and loved (from a list of 25 – 30 titles selected by librarians and booksellers) to complete strangers – people who may never have owned a book of their own. To promote this literacy event, libraries and bookstores, as organizational participants in the event, form a nationwide advocacy and distribution network. Sign up now and share your love of books and reading. But, don’t delay – the deadline for applications is Monday, October 1, 2012. Libraries are encouraged to apply for the $3,000 Scholastic Library Publishing National Library Week Grant, which will support one library’s public outreach efforts using the theme, Communities matter @ your library®. Proposals will be judged on the basis of creativity, originality, clarity of planning, and potential for generating widespread public visibility and support for libraries. The grant is sponsored by Scholastic Library Publishing, a division of Scholastic, the global children’s publishing, education, and media company, and is administered by the Public Awareness Committee of ALA.
