Want to know how to get started or how to maximize your research? Come to the free class, “Genealogy Resources,” led by Kim Smeenk of the Washington State Library. Kim will take you on a tour of some well known web sites, including Ancestry and Family Search, and will go over a few tips that will help you get the most out of searching for your family. She will also show you some hidden gems that will cover a variety of genealogy topics such as:

Locating census records;
Finding death information;
Viewing old newspapers online for free.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 2) LETTERS ABOUT LITERATURE 2013 DEADLINE APPROACHING There is still time to submit entries for the annual Letters About Literature contest. Please encourage the teachers and students in grades 4 – 10 at your school or in your library area to participate. Homeschoolers are welcome as well. Entries must be postmarked by Friday, January 11, 2013. For additional information, contact Crystal Lentz at [email protected] or 360.704.5275. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 3) GATES MILLENNIUM SCHOLARS PROGRAM Every year, the Gates Millennium Scholars (GMS) Program, funded by a grant from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, selects 1,000 talented students to receive a good-through-graduation scholarship to use at any college or university of their choice. The program aims to:

Reduce financial barriers for African American, American Indian/Alaska Native, Asian Pacific Islander American, and Hispanic American students with high academic and leadership promise who have significant need;
Increase representation of these target groups in disciplines, including library science, where these groups are severely underrepresented;
Develop a diversified cadre of future leaders for America by facilitating successful completion of bachelor’s, master’s, and doctoral degrees;
Provide seamless support from undergraduate through doctoral programs for students selected as Gates Millennium Scholars entering target disciplines.

The application process requires:

A Student Application completed and submitted by the student;
A Nominator Form completed and submitted by an educator (i.e., principal, teacher, guidance counselor, or higher education representative);
A Recommender Form completed and submitted by any adult who is familiar with the student’s community service and leadership activities.

All three application forms must be submitted online by Wednesday, January 16, 2013, 8:59 p.m. PST. To apply, visit www.gmsp.org. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 4) AWARDS FOR AFTER-SCHOOL PROGRAMS The President’s Committee on the Arts and the Humanities, in partnership with the National Endowment for the Arts, the National Endowment for the Humanities, and the Institute of Museum and Library Services, is currently accepting applications for the 2013 National Arts and Humanities Youth Program Awards. Twelve award-winning programs will receive $10,000 and an invitation to attend the Annual Awardee Conference in Washington, DC. Libraries sponsoring after-school and out-of-school time arts and humanities programs are encouraged to consider submitting applications, which are due no later than Monday, February 4, 2013, 5:00 p.m. PST. For additional information, visit www.nahyp.org/how-to-apply. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 5) GRANTS FOR AMERICA’S HISTORICAL AND CULTURAL ORGANIZATIONS The National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) is currently accepting applications for America’s Historical and Cultural Organizations grants, which provide support for museums, libraries, historic places, and other organizations that produce public programs in the humanities. Grants may fund the following activities:

Book/film discussion programs or other face-to-face programs at libraries, community centers, and other public venues;
Exhibitions;
Interpretations of historic places, sites, or regions;
Interpretive websites.

Two types of awards are available:

Planning grants support the early stages of project development, including consultation with scholars, refinement of humanities themes, preliminary design, and audience evaluation;
Implementation grants support final scholarly research and consultation, design development, production, and installation of a project for presentation to the public.
