Staff trying to keep up with emerging trends in technology, demographics, services, and job descriptions may feel somewhat at sea. Everyone reacts to change in different ways, from happy and excited to angry or blue. In Burnout: Avoiding the Flames, Debra Westwood, Library Cluster Manager, King County Library System, will look at how libraries are addressing individual and group responses to change and will show participants how to devise specific strategies that individuals and work groups can use to remain buoyant amid difficult seas. Designed as a continuing education opportunity for staff of libraries in Washington State, this free web presentation, which will take place on January 8, 2013, from 9:00 to 10:00 a.m. PST, lets attendees share their skills and successes and learn about new topics. Need clock hours? On a tight budget? There’s a solution for you! The Washington State Archives will be offering a free workshop, Common Core Tools for Educators: Resources for Classroom Research Projects, for teachers, librarians, and curriculum administrators in multiple locations throughout the state. Earn 3 clock hours while learning about primary sources at the Washington State Archives that can be used to meet Social Studies Common Core Standards. Workshops have been scheduled for five locations:

  • Tuesday, January 8, 2013, Ellensburg;
  • Thursday, January 10, 2013, Bellingham;
  • Thursday, January 10, 2013, Olympia;
  • Thursday, January 24, 2013, Bellevue;
  • Thursday, January 31, 2013, Cheney.
All workshops will be held from 4:00 – 7:00 p.m. PST. For additional information about each session and to register, visit www.sos.wa.gov/archives (scroll to the lower right-hand corner of the web page). --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 3) DEADLINE APPROACHING FOR DIGITAL AGE SURVEY The Pew Research Center’s Internet & American Life Project is in the midst of a multi-year study, funded by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, to explore the changing role of libraries in the digital age. The second phase of research has begun and the researchers at Pew would like your help as they explore the experiences and expectations of library users related to:
  • How they use their libraries;
  • What services they utilize the most;
  • What resources they wish their libraries offered.
A nationwide telephone survey on the library habits of Americans 16 and older has already been completed. Now the Center has designed a purely qualitative online questionnaire that briefly discusses various types of services and resources and invites any and all public library staff to provide more context about how libraries make decisions about services and programming. This is your chance to share your thoughts about the current (and future) state of libraries. Depending on the length of your answers, the survey should take about 10 – 20 minutes to complete. The questionnaire will be available until Sunday, December 23, 2012. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 4) STORYCORPS @ YOUR LIBRARY GRANTS StoryCorps @ your library (SCL), a two-year program created by ALA in partnership with StoryCorps, funded by a grant from the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS), is designed to encourage multi-format public programming on broad themes of oral narrative and local and family history that may be tailored to specific locales, holidays, or heritage months. This project will serve public libraries as they seek to expand their influence and capital in their communities by connecting them with the powerful resources and branding available through a StoryCorps partnership. ALA and StoryCorps will select 10 pilot sites, determined by their level of interest and ability to successfully carry out the project, with an eye toward geographical and demographic diversity. Libraries chosen to participate will receive a $2,500 stipend, promotional support materials, professional recording equipment, in-person training for library staff and volunteers, and tools to offer their patrons a fully facilitated StoryCorps interview experience as well as access to significant StoryCorps edited content. Applications are due Friday, January 18, 2013. For additional information about StoryCorps and to apply, visit www.programminglibrarian.org/storycorps. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 5) FREE ONLINE COLLECTIONS CARE COURSES Libraries and archives shoulder an immense responsibility to protect and preserve America’s treasures. And in an age of limited resources, tuition and travel costs can be an obstacle in training those charged with the care of collections. There is a solution; Heritage Preservation, with funding from an IMLS Laura Bush 21st Century Librarian Continuing Education grant, will be offering a new series of free, online courses, Caring for Yesterday’s Treasures – Today, about the preservation of archival and historical collections. Tailored to meet the needs and schedules of staff and volunteers at libraries and archives, each course includes four to six 90-minute interactive webinars presented by preservation experts. Courses scheduled for 2013 are as follows:
  • January – Collections Care Basics: Where Do I Begin?;
  • February – Risk Evaluation: First Step in Disaster Planning;
  • March – Protecting Your Collections: Writing a Disaster Response Plan;
  • April – Caring for Digital Materials: Preventing a Digital Dark Age;
  • May – Caring for Photographic Materials;
  • Fall – Caring for Audiovisual Materials;
  • Fall – Fundraising for Collections Care;
  • Fall – Outreach Activities for Collections Care.
Participants will earn a certificate of completion if they attend all webinars in a course and submit simple homework assignments. Although registration is free of charge, participants must submit a permission form signed by their supervisor to attend these courses.
