Cold Weather Resources on the Hard Times Guide

We've had a cold week here in Olympia, and I'm sure it's been chilly in other parts of the state as well. To help battle the cold, we've compiled a few cold weather resources for residents of Washington State. Learn about hypothermia (it can be sneaky!), how to avoid carbon monoxide poisoning, get some home weatherization tips, and more!

Washington Military Department: Emergency Management Division: In Focus - Winter Weather
Includes information on personal safety in the winter, as well as information for safe winter travel. Learn about hypothermia, food safety during power outages, carbon monoxide awareness, driving tips, and vehicle winterization. And don't forget to keep your pets warm!

Washington Department of Commerce: Weatherization
Learn what weatherization can do for your home, get some energy-saving tips, and find weatherization services and programs in your area. Find your local weatherization agency.

Department of Commerce: Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP)
LIHEAP is a federally funded block grant that provides money to help low income households make home heating more affordable, avoid shutoff of utility services during the winter, and maintain a warm, safe, and healthy environment for households with young children, the elderly, and the disabled. The LIHEAP Act requires that the highest level of assistance be provided to the lowest income households with the highest energy consumption, taking into account family size. Energy Assistance Program (EAP) services include: Payments made to energy companies in most cases, or directly to clients to help pay a portion of home heating costs. Client education and furnace repair/replacement are also offered. Weatherization (Wx) services include: Installation of weatherization materials and minor home repairs that are made in the homes of low-income people. Energy consumer education is also provided.

Stay warm!
