This free online class will help public librarians learn practical skills for approaching these types of questions. Participants will be able to:

  • Translate keywords from reference questions into legal search terms for finding resources;
  • Describe legal resources available through WA web sites (KCLL, WashingtonLawHelp and others);
  • Refer legal questions as appropriate to a law library

Time is short, yet we still need to “be together” to learn, to get work done, and to stay in touch with each other. Online technologies, such as Elluminate and other webinar software, now give us the chance to meet virtually through our computers. This free, 90-minute, online session will explore ways to make these meetings more productive, more engaging, and even more fun. Participants will learn, practice, and walk away with at least one tip that can be put to use at their next meeting, even if it is offline! Wednesday, November 17, 9:00 – 10:30 a.m. PST, and again from 2:00 – 3:30 p.m. PST the same day. To register, visit www.sos.wa.gov/quicklinks/peer. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 3) WLA GRADUATE STUDY SCHOLARSHIPS The Washington Library Association awards annual scholarship(s) to WLA members attending any accredited library school who will have completed at least 4 classes by spring semester or quarter. Up to $6,000 is awarded each year. Applicants are judged based on demonstrated potential for leadership in the profession; experience in community activities, volunteering, professional associations, or work involving libraries; and academic achievement. The applications process opens on November 1 and closes on December 15. Interviews will be held at the University of Washington on February 18 (in-person interviews preferred). The winner(s) will be honored at the annual WLA Conference. For more information, visit wla.org/training/scholarships/gradscholarships. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 4) HELP FOR STAFF WHO ARE HELPING JOB HUNTERS If you’re still struggling to assist your users on issues of employment and job opportunities, there’s a new series of five short video presentations available to help library staff help their patrons. Called “Tapas for Workforce Recovery: Learning in small bites,” the videos range from 12 minutes to 30 minutes and feature library trainer and consultant Pat Wagner. Topics include identifying types of job hunters, knowing when to enlist help for them from other agencies and partners, helping job hunters use social media tools in their search for employment, making job hunters aware of employment scams, and keeping staff and customers cool in tough times. The focus is on supporting nonprofit organizations dedicated to improving quality of life, particularly for low- and moderate-income individuals and communities. In Washington, organizations located in Benton, Franklin, Kittitas, and Yakima counties are eligible to apply. The charitable giving categories include: Education and Job Training, Community and Economic Development, Health and Human Care, and Civic and Cultural. Requests may be submitted throughout the year.
