To better understand this change, and what it means for WTBBL, its patrons, and for other libraries, join WTBBL’s Eura Ryan for the February First Tuesdays webinar, Feb. 1 at 9 a.m. Also learn how public libraries can assist WTBBL community members in downloading free books that patrons can keep for life. For instructions on joining the webinar, visit www.sos.wa.gov/quicklinks/FirstTuesdays. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 2) LIBRARY LEGISLATIVE DAY Registration is open for the Washington Library Association’s annual Library Legislative Day in Olympia on Friday, February 4. This is a great opportunity to network with library supporters from around the state and meet with State Legislators and their staff to discuss the value of libraries and the impact laws have on them. It’s easy for you to participate:

A continental breakfast will be provided to you during the welcome gathering at United Churches in Olympia in the morning. Boxed lunches are also available.
Members of WLA’s Legislative Planning Committee, in partnership with WLA’s legislative consultant, will brief you on critical issues facing libraries.
Registration allows you to request a mentor—the opportunity to shadow a WLA member during legislative visits.

You will be given all the tools you need to be effective in conveying pertinent messages about libraries, as well as information to give to Legislators during each visit. Your participation will help raise awareness about library services and ultimately enhance our ability to establish and sustain long-term relationships with key elected officials. NOTE: Public Disclosure Commission (PDC) guidelines prohibit most public employees from participating while on public time. Participation in this event needs to be on your own time. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 3) FREE GENEALOGY EVENT – BING CROSBY’S FAMILY HISTORY Join us for a Genealogy Workshop tracing Bing Crosby’s Washington roots. This free event is open to all who are interested in the fascinating story of Washington’s native son, Bing Crosby, and his rise to international fame, as well as to those who want to learn about researching family history. Gonzaga University, home to the Bing Crosby Archives, Crosbyana Room and family home, along with staff from the Washington State Library, Washington State Archives and Digital Archives, Crosby family members, local heritage organizations and volunteer genealogists will combine resources to unravel the Crosby family history and offer workshops that teach the fundamentals of researching your own family history. Registration for this free event is required as space is limited. For more information and to register visit www.HeritageCenter.wa.gov or call 360.902.4171. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 4) WASHINGTON LIBRARY SNAPSHOT DAY On April 12, 2011 Washington Library Snapshot Day will provide an opportunity for Washington libraries to “put themselves on the map” and be counted in a statewide survey of library programs. Create a video promoting summer reading at your library and you could win $250! The best short Public Service Announcement, using the theme “You Are Here,” produced by a Washington student or group of students that encourages use of their local public libraries and promotes reading all summer long will take away the contest prize. The top video will be featured throughout 2011 as the official commercial for Washington’s Summer Reading Program. Completed forms are due by March 7, 2011. For more information, visit www.sos.wa.gov/quicklinks/teenvideo. A new instructional tool has been added to the Member side of the CSLP site. The 3½ minute video contains general tips about storyboarding, holding the camera and choosing camera shots to frame the action. It provides basic information that will help new videographers as well as tips on where to obtain free video editing software. Librarians may use the video as a self-training tool or play it for a teen audience. After login, this video is available to librarians on the CSLP “Teen Video Challenge Page” at www.cslpreads.org/video-challenge.html.
