To make sure you are comfortable in the world of electronics and .azw files, register now for Public Librarian’s Guide to E-Books: A PLA Webinar Series. Presented in four weekly webinars, this series offers a practical approach to integrating e-books, e-readers, and related e-materials into public library collections. The tone will be down-to-earth and sensible, addressing the basics such as why e-books and e-readers are important to libraries and providing a cookbook approach to adding e-books to collections of all sizes. By attending Public Librarian’s Guide to E-Books: A PLA Webinar Series, participants will:

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 3) DO YOU KNOW A “STAR” IN LIBRARY ADULT SERVICES? The Reference and User Services Association (RUSA), a division of the American Library Association (ALA) is currently accepting nominations for the Margaret E. Monroe Library Adult Services Award. Established in 1985, this citation is presented to an individual who has made significant contributions to library adult services. The nominee may be a practicing librarian, a library and information science researcher or educator, or a retired librarian who has brought distinction to the profession’s understanding and practice or to services for adults. The criteria for “significant contributions” will be judged by such factors as publications, leadership, measurable effectiveness of programs, influence on others, and creative and innovative concepts. Submissions must be received no later than December 15, 2011. The one-hour webinar, Building Community: Online Tools for Spanish Speakers, will help participants maximize the potential of their library to connect with, and provide services for, Spanish-speaking patrons. Instructor Loida Garcia-Febo will present tips about blending emerging technologies and social media with in-person services such as programming and reference to build a library community that welcomes and assists Spanish speakers. She will also provide successful service examples from libraries in the United States, Mexico, Columbia, and other countries. By attending this webinar, participants will:

Learn best practices, tips, and information about how emerging technologies can be used to improve their library’s connection to the Spanish-speaking community;
Hear how building a blended community of service, networking with colleagues, and connecting with library users can help to improve library services to Spanish-speaking patrons;
Get great ideas to take back to their communities to start or reinvigorate services to Spanish-speaking patrons.

In Reaching Reluctant Readers, a free, hour-long webinar moderated by Booklist’s Books for Youth senior editor Ian Chipman, representatives from five publishers – ABDO, Abrams Books for Young Readers, Saddleback Educational Publishing, Lorimer, and Orca Book Publishers – will present books that provide a combination of high-interest topics and accessible writing.
