This year’s conference will “Bring Washington’s Libraries Together” by offering more than 40 programs and featuring more than 50 companies exhibiting their new products and services. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 2) FREE WORKSHOP – PROTECTING CULTURAL COLLECTIONS Fire, floods, earthquakes, broken pipes – disasters can happen at any time, endangering both lives and property and damaging or destroying a community’s cultural heritage. Having a plan in place and knowing what to do in advance can prevent, or help to mitigate, damage and loss. Registration is now open for a free 2-part disaster preparedness and response workshop offered by the Western States and Territories Preservation Assistance Service (WESTPAS). This workshop is part of a coordinated regional approach to raising awareness about disaster planning for collecting institutions throughout the Western United States. This 2-part training is free to participants, who will:
  • Complete a disaster response and collection salvage plan for their collections by the end of Part 2;
  • Learn how to train staff to implement the plan effectively;
  • Set pre- and post-disaster action priorities for collections;
  • Learn how to use practical decision-making skills during an emergency;
  • Have hands-on practice in salvage procedures for a variety of materials including books, documents, photographs, and objects.
Workshop information:
  • Part 1: Tuesday, March 27, 2012, 9:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m.;
  • Part 2: Tuesday, May 8, 2012, 9:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m.;
  • Location: Odegaard Undergraduate Library, Room 220, University of Washington, Seattle, WA;
  • Workshop instructor: Gary Menges, retired Preservation Administrator at the University of Washington Libraries, Seattle, and member of AIC CERT.

For questions related to the workshop, please contact Gary Menges at [email protected]. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 3) PRIZES FOR EXCEPTIONAL IMMIGRANT INTEGRATION PROGRAMS Each year, the national awards program, E Pluribus Unum Prizes, rewards exceptional initiatives that promote immigrant integration. The awards recognize outstanding initiatives of all types, whether led by nonprofit or community organizations, businesses, public agencies, religious groups, or individuals. This year, the program will award three $50,000 prizes as well as one Corporate Leadership Award. If you are involved in an exceptional immigrant integration initiative, you are encouraged to apply for recognition. Applications must be received no later than March 15, 2012. Each of the eight speakers is from a small library or works directly with small libraries. Topics will range from technology (old and new), to programming, to new roles for the library. Everyone is welcome to register and attend, regardless of how big or small their library is. Programs include:
  • Helping Your Patrons E-Read;
  • Community Partnerships;
  • Developing a Read/Write Culture in Your Library;
  • Combo School/Public Libraries;
  • Magic Tricks and Maintenance: Helping the Public Learn Technology;
  • Working in the Cloud;
  • Gaming and Game Collection Development.
