There is no cost increase for public and academic libraries and the subscription renewal will be automatic unless a cancellation form is submitted by March 28, 2012. There will be a 10% increase for K-12 school libraries and school districts. K-12 subscribers need to submit a purchase order to Recorded Books by the same date. If canceling, K-12 institutions should submit a cancellation form. New subscriptions are also welcome now or at any time. More information and forms are available at www.sos.wa.gov/quicklinks/join. For questions, contact Will Stuivenga at [email protected], 360.704.5217, toll-free 866.538.4996. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 2) FREE WORKSHOP – PROTECTING CULTURAL COLLECTIONS Fire, floods, earthquakes, broken pipes – disasters can happen at any time, endangering both lives and property, and damaging or destroying a community’s cultural heritage. Having a plan in place and knowing what to do in advance can prevent, or help to mitigate, damage and loss. It’s not too late to register for a free 2-part disaster preparedness and response workshop offered by the Western States and Territories Preservation Assistance Service (WESTPAS). This workshop is part of a coordinated regional approach to raising awareness about disaster planning for collecting institutions throughout the Western United States. This 2-part training is free to participants, who will:
- Complete a disaster response and collection salvage plan for their collections by the end of Part 2;
- Learn how to train staff to implement the plan effectively;
- Set pre- and post-disaster action priorities for collections;
- Learn how to use practical decision-making skills during an emergency;
- Have hands-on practice in salvage procedures for a variety of materials including books, documents, photographs, and objects.

- Professional development strategies, such as training and mentoring;
- Library trends and their impact on ILL.
- Conducting a capital campaign;
- Rethinking the best ways to help your users;
- Discovering new fantasy books for teens;
- Integrating eBooks in your library.
- Preservation as a formal library function, and how it reflects and supports the institutional mission;
- The primary role of preventive care, including good storage conditions, emergency planning, and careful handling of collections;
- The history and manufacture of physical formats and how this affects preservation options;
- Standard methods of care and repair, as well as reformatting options;
- Challenges in preserving digital content and what the implications are for the future of scholarship.
