Environmental Management: Stewardship & Sustainability, presented by the Conservation Center for Art & Historic Artifacts (CCAHA), is a one-day program that will explore new approaches to controlling environmental conditions in cultural institutions – a challenge when collections are housed in historic buildings, or those with aging systems, or in structures designed without environmental management in mind, but critical to ensure long-term preservation of all collections. Leading experts in the field will present physically and financially feasible environmental control strategies to help institutions preserve collections materials for the long-term. Topics covered will include:

  • The collections environment;
  • Understanding the building/climate relationship;
  • New approaches and best practices for environmental control;
  • Environmental monitoring and data analysis.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 2) FREE ART BOOKS FOR SCHOOL AND PUBLIC LIBRARIES The Distribution to Underserved Communities Library Program (DUC) provides books on contemporary art and culture free of charge to rural and inner-city public libraries, public schools, and alternative reading centers nationwide. The program, which fosters partnerships between publishers, non-profit organizations, librarians, and readers to enrich and diversify library collections, is committed to documenting, supporting, and making accessible contemporary artists’ voices and work to the broadest possible audience. Since its founding 20 years ago, the DUC has distributed more than 300,000 free books to communities in need. Each qualifying institution is allowed to place one order during DUC’s year, which runs from July through June. (Note: Institutions placing an order before the end of June will be eligible to place a second book order in July.) Due to the large volume of orders received, up to two months should be allowed for delivery of selected materials. All books are shipped completely free of charge. It’s not too late to apply! Applications are still being accepted for two positions on the Library Council of Washington – one representing Special Libraries, the other representing Public Libraries serving fewer than 100,000 persons. But don’t delay – applications must be postmarked by Friday, April 6, 2012 to be considered. The term for both of these positions is anticipated to begin in September 2012. Through funding from the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH), the Conservation Center for Art & Historic Artifacts (CCAHA) is currently able to offer a limited number of subsidized Preservation Needs Assessments Program Grant Awards for $350, including the assessor’s travel expenses. Institutions selected to participate in the Program will be visited by an expert who will:
  • Conduct a review of their site;
  • Examine the collections;
  • Interview relevant staff;
  • Provide a written report of the site visit, providing observations, recommendations, and resources, which can then serve as a guide in the development of a comprehensive preservation plan for their institution.

For more information about the grant and to apply, visit www.sos.wa.gov/quicklinks/CCAHApnap. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 5) CONSERVATION INTERNSHIP AVAILABLE The University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) Library Preservation Department is offering a conservation pre-program internship for qualified students who are applying for Masters-level training in conservation. This internship will provide valuable experience in conservation decision making, treatment, and documentation for library and archival collections. The conservation intern will work under the supervision of the collections conservator in performing repairs of materials or making enclosures for items selected from the collections. Internship specifics:
  • When: Summer, 2012;
  • Duration: 8 weeks (30 hours/week), with a flexible start date;
  • Application deadline: Friday, April 13, 2012;
