The goal of the project is to find ways in which different parts of the state’s early learning system – from state agencies to local child care providers – can work together more effectively to support children in Washington, focusing in particular on improving coordination and communication between programs. The research, under way since February of this year, has helped to identify barriers to a strong early learning system, opportunities for improving it, and promising practices from other states. In this initial round of outreach, DEL and its partners wants to hear from you – your thoughts and advice – so that they can plan for and make improvements based on an accurate understanding of the current early learning terrain in Washington. Comments must be submitted no later than Tuesday, July 31, 2012. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 2) CALL FOR PROPOSALS – ONLINE NORTHWEST Online Northwest is a one-day conference that explores how technology is applied within library settings and how it affects access and services for patrons. The 2013 conference will be held in Corvallis, Oregon, on Friday, February 8, 2013. Online Northwest 2013 is currently seeking 45-minute presentations or 5-minute lightning talks on all topics relating to technology and libraries including:

  • Mobile computing;
  • Electronic books and e-readers;
  • Cloud computing;
  • Virtual research environments;
  • Web 3.0;
  • Library apps;
  • Technology competencies.
Other topics related to technology in libraries are welcome. Academic, public, school, and special librarians are strongly encouraged to submit proposals, which are due no later than Monday, October 15, 2012. Building grassroots support can make the difference in challenging economic times. Start to take action today by registering for the free webinar, Introducing Grassroots Library Advocacy. The presenters, Lauren Comito, Aliqae Geraci, and Christian Zabriskie, founders of savenyclibraries.org and leadership of Urban Librarians Unite, will provide a roadmap for saving your library from severe cuts or minimizing the damage that they cause. They will discuss library campaign case studies from New York City and beyond as well as strategic uses of library campaign tools and tactics such as:

  • Read-ins;
  • Postcard campaigns.

What is the future of integrated library systems? The Association for Library Collections & Technical Services (ALCTS), a division of ALA, is offering the webinar, The Future of the Integrated Library System?, presented by Walter Nelson, from the RAND Corporation. The hour-long session will examine the current state of integrated library systems and their declining relevance to the needs of libraries and their patrons. It will also posit a comprehensive knowledge management focus for libraries as well as a new way of thinking about the disciplines of librarianship. Webinar information:
