Start planning ahead and come to Summer Reading, presented by Martha Shinners from the Washington State Library. Martha will be providing an overview of the 2013 Summer Reading Program, Dig into Reading, including an update on the resources found on the CSLP website. There will be time for questions and answers and for those attending to share their experiences. This free online webinar will take place on November 6, 2012, from 9:00 to 10:00 a.m. PST. Explore the wide range of informative programs that included:

Body Confidence: How It Is Developed and Its Impact on Intelligence and Character;
STEM in the Library – Getting Started, Finding Funding;
Mediating Media: Best Practices for Using Screen media with Young Children;
Expanding STEM Learning in the Early Years.

To view the presentations, go to www.sos.wa.gov/quicklinks/ELPLPSTEM. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 3) HEALTH AND WELLNESS COMPETENCY TRAINING Nearly a fifth of our nation’s GDP is spent on health care – double that of any other nation. The most significant growth in health care spending, according to the Public Health Institute, stems from an increase in chronic diseases linked to modifiable risk factors such as obesity and stress. Since the most devastating effects can often be prevented or controlled by adopting healthy behaviors, health promotion has been identified as holding great potential for reducing health care costs for all. Public and consumer health librarians are essential for linking patrons from all walks of life to quality health information in appropriate formats. This FREE training consists of six self-paced online modules that will help library staff gain the knowledge to provide outstanding consumer health services and extend the role of the library with regard to building healthy communities. When you register for the Health and Wellness Competencies you will have access to all the mini-courses in this suite for three months. Expect to spend 2 hours per mini-course. These mini courses are made possible by funding from the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), U.S. Department of Commerce via the University of California Davis and are offered at no charge to participants. For more information, and to register, visit infopeople.org/training/health-and-wellness-competencies. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 4) ALA LIBRARYAWARE AWARD The LibraryAware Community Award emphasizes a library’s engagement with the community and will recognize a library or library system that has demonstrated its ability to make its community “aware” of what the library can do for it—and has delivered on that promise. The award will be given by Library Journal, and funded by LibraryAware, a product of EBSCO Publishing’s NoveList Division. The award will be given annually to a community of any size and its library during National Library Week. It will be presented to the mayor, city/county manager, or city council president, and library director. The first award will be announced in April 2013 (NLW is April 14-20, 2013). The city/county will receive a plaque identifying it as a “LibraryAware” community. The winning library will receive $10,000. Second place is $7500 and third place is $5000. The winning library also will be featured in an article in the April 1, 2013 issue of Library Journal. The deadline for submitting nominations is December 15, 2012. For more information on this and other LJ awards, visit features.libraryjournal.com/awards. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 5) AMERICAN LIBRARIES LIVE – A NEW KIND OF DIALOG American Libraries Live, a free streaming video broadcast viewable from your home, library or favorite wi-fi spot, is a new kind of dialogue and communication in the library world. AL Live allows viewers to watch broadcasts about library issues and trends in real time and interact with hosts via a live chat, offering immediate answers to your pressing questions. With the help of real-time technology, it’s like having your own experts on hand. Professionals like ALA TechSource columnist Jason Griffey, author of Mobile Technology and Libraries, and other respected figures from the industry will address important topics such as how to get an ideal library job, the latest innovations in mobile services, digging into databases and the inside scoop on libraries and e-books. In the first program, “Library 2017: Tech at Warp Speed,” airing at 11:00 a.m. Pacific Time on Friday, November 16, Griffey and a panel of experts will speak about libraries in the near future. Host Dan Freeman and Griffey discuss American Libraries Live and the upcoming program at www.americanlibrarieslive.org. Future episodes are listed at the same site.
