New titles include:

The Indian captive: a narrative of the adventures and sufferings of Matthew Brayton, in his thirty-four years of captivity among the Indians of north-western America by J.H.A. Bone, 1860;
Depredations and massacre by the Snake river Indians: letter of the acting Secretary of the Interior transmitting a report of the Commissioner of Indian affairs. . . . by United States, Bureau of Indian Affairs, 1861;

Friends of the Library representatives from both large and small libraries discuss how to make library Friends groups great. The panelists share what makes their particular groups successful—what has worked well, what has not. What doesn’t work for one may be successful for another group! Program details:

Sponsored by WLFFTA (Washington Library Friends, Foundations, Trustees, and Advocates), a Washington Library Association interest group. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 4) SONGS TO READ! BOOKS TO SING! Award-winning children’s musician and author Jim Gill will lead a free workshop for librarians and childcare providers on Friday, November 16, from 2:00 – 5:00 p.m. at the Port Angeles Main Library. This presentation, Songs to Read! Books to Sing! will give librarians and childcare providers new ideas to enhance story times and children’s programming. Jim will share music and play that can be utilized in story times for preschoolers as well as with infants, toddlers, and parents. Jim Gill is a musician and author with unique credentials among children's artists. Gill is a child development specialist, completing his graduate studies in child development at the Erikson Institute of Chicago with a special emphasis on the study of play. Each of his recordings and books is created as an opportunity for playful interactions between a child and a caring adult. The workshop is being made possible through a Continuing Education grant from the Washington State Library and with the generous support of the Port Angeles Friends of the Library. The Port Angeles Library will also host a public performance by Jim Gill on Saturday, November 17, at 10:30 a.m. Childcare professionals, librarians are welcome to attend. Pre-registration is required for the workshop. Call (360) 417-8502 or email [email protected] for more information. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 5) PRESERVATION GRANT WORKSHOP Would you like to get a preservation grant to take care of your collections? Many institutions have used grant-funded projects to enhance the level of care they can provide for their collections, and sometimes even to jump start their preservation programs. "Creating and Funding Preservation Projects to Enhance Collection Care" is a free one-day workshop that begins with identifying and setting priorities among collection needs. With a clear sense of needs, the second part of the workshop reviews sources of grant funding available to your institution. The third part of the workshop addresses the key preservation questions asked on grant applications; participants answer the questions on behalf of their institutions, building the elements of a proposal for their own collection. The workshop emphasizes working collaboratively with colleagues to develop and receive feedback on project proposals. Workshop details:
