This free exhibit is made possible by a partnership of the National Endowment for the Humanities, the Library of America, and the Gilder Lehrman Institute of American History. Next Monday, November 19, 2012, will be the last day this special exhibit will be in the state of Washington. To mark the occasion, nationally recognized professor, anthropologist, and director of the Museum of Culture and Environment, Mark Auslander, will give a special lecture at 7:00 p.m., entitled “Rose’s Gamble: African Americans and the Civil War, in History and Memory.” Don’t miss this opportunity to connect with the past! The editorial committee of Alki would like your feedback and invite you to send your thoughts, comments, and suggestions to [email protected]. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 3) WLA GRADUATE STUDY SCHOLARSHIPS The Washington Library Association (WLA) annually awards one or more scholarships of up to $6,000 to WLA members who are enrolled in an ALA-accredited MLIS degree program and who have completed at least one semester or quarter. Applicants are evaluated based on demonstrated potential for leadership in the profession and commitment to libraries and library service. Applications and all supporting materials must be postmarked by Monday, December 31, 2012. For more information go to www.sos.wa.gov/quicklinks/WLAScholars. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 4) PUBLIC LIBRARY GRANTS FOR TEENS AND NEWS LITERACY ALA is seeking three public libraries to participate in year two of its “News Know-how” Program that will engage students working through, and with, librarians, journalists, and news ethicists in this program, which is funded by the Open Society Foundations and administered by ALA’s Office of Intellectual Freedom (OIF). The Program wants to create partnerships and collaborations for a nonpartisan, critical analysis of news and information. In addition, high school students (grades 10 – 12), with public libraries as their “newsroom,” will learn how to:

Distinguish facts from opinions;
Check the source and validity of news and information;
Identify propaganda and misinformation.

Through the support of libraries under this initiative, students will be given the tools to assess the accuracy and credibility of news and information access across various media and platforms. They will also be encouraged to practice news literacy by engaging with the media in their communities. Libraries will receive several benefits, including more than $50,000 worth of training and support and the opportunity to provide a chance for young people to work and connect with highly respected journalists from around the country. Libraries interested in applying are invited to participate in one of two conference calls (Monday, November 26, at 8:00 a.m. PST or Tuesday, November 27 at 12:00 PST) that will provide an overview of the Program and a chance to ask questions. Proposals are due no later than Saturday, December 8, 2012. Presentation topics this year include digital literacy, e-readers, distance learning, and digital collections. The keynote speaker will be Virginia Eubanks, author of “Digital Dead End: Fighting for Social Justice in the Information Age.” For more information about Online Northwest 2013, visit www.ous.edu/onlinenw/index.html.
