If your library could use gently used copies of any of the following titles for community reads or book discussion kits, the Washington State Library will be happy to send them your way.

If you are interested, please contact Carolyn Petersen at [email protected], toll-free at 866.538.4996, or 360.570.5560. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 3) NATIONAL LEADERSHIP GRANTS FOR LIBRARIES The Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS) is currently accepting applications for National Leadership Grants for Libraries (NLG-Libraries). In addition to the types of proposals normally supported by the NLG-Libraries program, IMLS is continuing to demonstrate its commitment to early learning in FY 2013 by encouraging proposals that address learners from ages 0 – 8 along with their parents and caregivers. NLG-Libraries applicants are encouraged to partner with community organizations to address at least one of the challenges identified by the Campaign for Grade Level Reading including school readiness, summer reading loss, and chronic school absences. Members of the IMLS staff are available by phone and e-mail to discuss general issues relating to NLG-Libraries. Those interested in applying are also invited to participate in a pre-application web conference on Tuesday, January 8, 2013, from 11:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. PST to learn more about the program, ask questions, and listen to the questions and comments of other participants. IGNITION GRANTS FOR LIBRARIES AND MUSEUMS The Sparks! Ignition Grants for Libraries and Museums are a special funding opportunity within the IMLS National Leadership Grants program. These small grants encourage libraries, museums, and archives to test and evaluate specific innovations in the ways they operate and the services they provide. Sparks Grants support the deployment, testing, and evaluation of promising and groundbreaking new tools, products, services, or organizational practices. Successful proposals should have both broad potential impact as well as significant innovation. Members of the IMLS staff are available by phone and e-mail to discuss general issues relating to Sparks! Ignition Grants. We live in an age of rapid change. How can libraries keep up in such an environment? During a recent BookExpo meeting, a publishing company executive asserted, “Any company that isn’t behaving like a start-up is doomed.” What does this mean in the context of service organizations such as libraries, as well as businesses, such as publishers and vendors, that serve the library industry? How can large institutions be more nimble, act more quickly, and adopt new technologies more easily? What can be learned from startups and what should be avoided? Find out more at the National Information Standards Organization (NISO) webinar, Behave Like a Startup: Adapting Your Organization to Rapid Change. Speakers will include:
