Join us for the next First Tuesdays program, Building Library Support within Your Business Community, at which Spokane Public Library reference librarian Mark Pond will share how his outreach to the local business community has resulted in a surge of usage from this important group. Designed as a continuing education opportunity for staff of libraries in Washington State, this free web presentation, which will take place on February 5, 2013, from 9:00 to 10:00 a.m. PST, lets attendees share their skills and successes and learn about new topics. Find out more at Wolves in Washington State, a free travelling exhibit hosted by the Washington State Library, which will introduce visitors to the unique history of wolves in The Evergreen State, from their importance to Pacific Northwest Native American culture to the state’s new wolf management plan. The exhibit will include:

  • A touchable wolf skull cast;
  • Touchable comparative species tracks;
  • A “Frequently Asked Questions” takeaway brochure;
  • Special events featuring guest speakers.

  • When: Monday - Friday, February 4 – April 12, 2013, 8:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m., (Note: The exhibit will be closed Monday, February 18, for Presidents’ Day);

Wolves in Washington State was organized by the Burke Museum, University of Washington, in consultation with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 3) $1,000 AWARD FOR STUDENT AUTHORS The Library and Information Technology Association (LITA), a division of ALA, is offering an award of $1,000 and publication in LITA’s refereed journal, Information Technology and Libraries (ITAL) for the best unpublished manuscript submitted by a student or students enrolled in an ALA-accredited graduate program. Submissions can be on any aspect of libraries and information technology, covering topics such as:
  • Digital libraries;
  • Metadata;
  • Electronic journals and electronic publishing;
  • Computer security;
  • Intellectual property rights;
  • Desktop applications.

This award is sponsored by LITA and Ex Libris. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 4) LIBRARY SERVICES IN THE DIGITAL AGE The Internet has already had a major impact on how people find and access information, and now the rising popularity of e-books is helping to transform Americans’ reading habits. In this changing landscape, public libraries are trying to adjust their services to these new realities while still serving the needs of patrons who rely on more traditional resources. In a new survey of Americans’ attitudes and expectations for public libraries, the Pew Research Center’s Internet & American Life Project finds that many library patrons are eager to see libraries’ digital services expand, yet also feel that print books remain important in the digital age. This recent Pew report, Library Services in the Digital Age, released January 22, 2013, explores:
  • How Americans use public libraries;
  • What the public perceives as priorities for libraries;
  • What new services people say they would use in the future.

WebWise brings together representatives of museums, libraries, archives, systems science, education, and other fields to explore the many opportunities made possible by digital technologies. WebWise 2013 will focus on the theme, “Putting the Learner at the Center,” and will feature a new participatory and interactive format. Sessions will include:
  • Workshops: Using IdeaScale, participants will have an opportunity to help shape the conference agenda;
  • Project Demonstrations: Providing the opportunity to learn from exemplary projects and engage in in-depth discussions;
  • Project/Partnership Incubator: Enabling participants to connect, hatch new ideas, and work with potential collaborators in small working sessions;
  • Sharing: Inspiring attendees to implement new ideas at their home institutions.
