If you are interested, please contact Carolyn Petersen at [email protected], or 360.570.5560. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 2) DIGITAL LITERACY AWARENESS CAMPAIGN Have you heard of Connect2Compete (C2C) and its EveryoneOn campaign? Significant things are happening now, as this 3-year national public service campaign to promote digital literacy, supported by $90 million of donated pro bono work and ad space marshaled by the Ad Council, is due to be launched on 3.21 (March 21, 2013). One important component is to encourage people who are limited or non-Internet users to learn how to “do one thing better online.” Public libraries are key to the success of this effort because of their demonstrated commitment to providing free access to the Internet, as well as to improving people’s computer skills (e.g., using a mouse, applying for jobs online, or creating e-mail accounts). To better understand how your library can participate in EveryoneOn, C2C has provided three resources in advance of the official launch. Please take a look at these components:
  • A program brief, which explains more about EveryoneOn and what to expect in the next few months and during the campaign;
  • Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ), which will be updated as questions arise;
  • A webinar recording, which provides an overview of some of the campaign highlights.

Look for more information soon! --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 3) THERE’S STILL TIME TO ENTER THE TEEN VIDEO CHALLENGE There is still time to submit entries for the 2013 Teen Video Challenge, a national video competition for teens to get involved with reading and their public library’s summer reading program. As part of the Collaborative Summer Library Program (CSLP), teens across the country are invited to create a 30 to 90 second video with their unique interpretation of the 2013 teen slogan, “Beneath the Surface,” in combination with reading and libraries. The idea is to involve teens in summer reading, before and during the summer months, by being part of the process. This is an opportunity for teens to showcase their creativity and have their ideas heard before a national audience. CSLP will award $275 to one Washington 2013 Teen Video Challenge winner or winning team. The library listed on the entry form will receive $100 from CSLP and a $25 gift certificate for Upstart products. All of the state winning videos will be posted on the 2013 Winners page of the CSLP website and will be available for libraries in Washington and nationwide to promote the 2013 reading program. Entry forms must be received by Saturday, February 23, 2013. For more information about CSLP, visit www.cslpreads.org. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 4) LIBRARY FRIENDS AND THE LAW Friends of the Library groups need to remain current on changing Washington State Law to stay within the regulations for nonprofit organizations. “Washington Law and the Friends of the Library: What Friends’ Groups Need to Know” is a presentation and discussion by attorney Daniel Gottlieb, Gottlieb Fisher PLLC, that will cover pertinent information on IRS and nonprofits, levy lifts, nonprofits and elections, advertising, and more. This program will consist of a streaming video broadcast of the program originally presented at the 2012 WLA Annual Conference in Tulalip. Those in attendance have indicated that it was a very informative and valuable session, presented in a personable and comprehensible style. This free online program is scheduled for Thursday, February 14, at 10:00 a.m. PST. To join the presentation at the appointed time, use this link: www.sos.wa.gov/quicklinks/WLFFTA-link. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 5) IMLS 2010 PUBLIC LIBRARY SURVEY RESULTS ANNOUNCED Although numbers for circulation, program attendance, and computer use in public libraries nationwide continue to climb, public libraries have seen reductions in operating revenue, service hours, and staffing, according to a new report, 2010 Public Libraries in the United States Survey, released on January 22, 2013, by the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS). “Public libraries in America continue as strong anchors for their communities, valued by the people they serve and striving to meet the changing needs of their service populations,” said IMLS Director Susan Hildreth. “The survey reports decreasing levels of state and federal funding for public libraries, with local support providing a greater portion of funding than ever before … The study finds that attendance at children’s programs reached 60.5 million and circulation of children’s materials increased 28.3 percent over the last 10 years.” This is the first federal statistical report focused on public libraries that goes beyond analysis at a national level analysis to report on trends at the local, regional, and state levels.
