At the next First Tuesdays, Lynn Kanne, Reference Librarian at Seattle Central Community College, will give a presentation on how this project, Library as Instructional Leader, involving over 40 faculty and about 2,000 students, was implemented and what findings emerged. This free web presentation will take place on March 5, 2013, from 9:00 to 10:00 a.m. PST. First Tuesdays are designed as a continuing education opportunity for staff of libraries in Washington State, providing attendees with the opportunity to share their skills and successes and learn about new topics. For more information and to register, visit www.wla.org/2013-conference-home. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 4) CIVIL WAR READ-IN The 150th anniversary of the American Civil War will be observed across the United States from now through 2015. In spite of its impact on our national consciousness, today’s Washingtonians typically know very little of the effect the war had on those who lived here during that time. There were no battlefields in Washington Territory, but there were duels, fistfights, and vandalism here as settlers disputed the very same issues that tore the United States apart. To commemorate this critical point in our nation’s history, the Washington State Historical Society is preparing to launch a major exhibition, Civil War Pathways, in February 2014, and would like to enlist your help in finding out more about the Washington Territory during the antebellum, wartime, and early Reconstruction periods. Volunteers participating in the project will be asked to attend one training session before visiting archives, museums, and libraries throughout the state to research the period from 1857 – 1871. They will share their discoveries by scanning and uploading them as part of the work to create an online searchable database of Civil War-era citations and documents hosted by the Washington State Historical Society. The unique stories that are uncovered will make a permanent record for generations to come. To find out more about the project, including upcoming training sessions, visit www.washingtonhistory.org/pathways.aspx. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 5) EARLY LEARNING GRANTS FROM BOEING The Boeing Company supports lifelong learning programs that help children, especially those from underserved populations, well before they set foot in a classroom. Boeing is now accepting applications for their Corporate Citizenship grants for early learning projects that can demonstrate:
  • Evidence-based programs that increase parent, caregiver, and childcare provider understanding of early childhood development;
  • School readiness approaches that promote collaboration between public agencies, school districts, and early learning programs.
Letters of inquiry are being solicited from March to July 2013. Full grant proposals are solicited from April to September 2013.
