Topics include: 1) WOLVES AT THE STATE LIBRARY 2) HELP CELEBRATE TWO GREAT BIRTHDAYS 3) SNAPDRAGON GRANTS FOR SCHOOL LIBRARIES 4) PRESERVATION GRANTS FOR SMALLER INSTITUTIONS 5) PEW WANTS TO HEAR FROM YOU 6) FREE CE OPPORTUNITIES NEXT WEEK --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 1) WOLVES AT THE STATE LIBRARY Absent for more than 70 years, wolves are once more repopulating the landscape in Washington, reclaiming their natural heritage as apex carnivores. On Thursday, March 14, 2013, Lorna Smith, Executive Director of Western Wildlife Outreach, and her husband, wildlife biologist, Darrell Smith, will give two presentations on “The Way of the Wolf” at the Washington State Library, in partnership with the Burke Museum’s traveling wolf exhibit:

  • Brown bag lunch and discussion, 12:00 – 1:00 p.m. PDT;
  • Evening presentation with video, photos, and maps, followed by audience questions and comments, 6:00 – 7:00 p.m. PDT.

Come back to the State Library for a brown bag presentation on Thursday, March 21, 12:00 – 1:00 p.m. PDT, when Linda Saunders, Director of Conservation at Wolf Haven International, will speak on “The Wolves of Washington.” All events are free and will be held in the Second Floor Reading Room of the Washington State Library, Point Plaza East, 6880 Capitol Boulevard, Tumwater. For more information or to RSVP, call 360.704.5221. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 2) HELP CELEBRATE TWO GREAT BIRTHDAYS May 25th marks the birthday of two great voices in the world of Washington poetry – Raymond Carver and Theodore Roethke. Under the sponsorship of Tess Gallagher, Peninsula College, and Washington’s Poet Laureate, Kathleen Flenniken, poetry lovers across the state are invited to design and hold readings celebrating the work of these two outstanding poets. If you need assistance or would like to share information about your reading, contact Alice Derry at [email protected]. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 3) SNAPDRAGON GRANTS FOR SCHOOL LIBRARIES The Snapdragon Book Foundation, founded by a former school librarian, provides funds to improve school libraries in public, private, and experimental schools serving disadvantaged children. Applications for 2013 grants will be accepted through Monday, April 15, 2013. For more information about the grants and to apply, visit www.sos.wa.gov/quicklinks/snapdragon. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 4) PRESERVATION GRANTS FOR SMALLER INSTITUTIONS Preservation Assistance Grants, awarded by the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH), help small and mid-sized institutions, such as libraries, historical societies, and archival repositories, improve their ability to preserve and care for their significant humanities collections, including:
  • Special collections of books and journals;
  • Archives and manuscripts;
  • Prints and photographs;
  • Moving images;
  • Sound recordings;
  • Historical objects;
  • Digital materials.
Applicants must draw on the knowledge of consultants whose preservation skills and experience are related to the types of collections and the nature of the activities that are the focus of their projects. Small and mid-sized institutions that have never received an NEH grant are especially encouraged to apply. A free webinar will be held on Thursday, March 14, 2013, 11:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m. PDT to provide guidance on preparing Preservation Assistance Grant applications. Seating is limited. The deadline to submit applications is May 1, 2013 for projects beginning January 2014. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 5) PEW WANTS TO HEAR FROM YOU The Pew Research Center’s Internet & American Life Project is in the midst of a multi-year study of the changing role of public libraries in the digital age. Funded by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, this project is exploring how library patrons’ needs and expectations are changing in the era of eBooks, widespread mobile connectivity, and the existence of vast digital collections. Although data is used to tell much of the story, Pew also relies heavily on qualitative research to help in their understanding of the larger trends they observe in their studies. To add to the information that has been gleaned from Pew’s nationally representative phone surveys, researchers at Pew Internet will be conducting a series of non-scientific, non-representative online questionnaires and interviews to learn more about the changing role of technology in the lives of its users. They would like to hear from public librarians, library users, and owners of tablet computers and eBook readers who would be interested in participating in future studies.
