  • The Warmth of Other Suns: The Epic Story of America’s Great Migration by Isabel Wilkerson – 8 copies;
  • The Last Chinese Chef: A Novel by Nicole Mones – 17 copies;
  • All Over Creation by Ruth Ozeki – 17 copies;
  • The Art of Racing in the Rain: A Novel by Garth Stein – 240 copies, plus 3 large print and 9 audio CD copies.
Requests must be for no fewer than five copies of an individual title. Books will be mailed free of charge. If you are interested, please e-mail Carolyn Petersen at [email protected]. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 2) MARK YOUR CALENDARS FOR PREVIEW OF NEW LIBRARY TRUSTEE WIKI The Washington State Library has published trustee manuals for public libraries in the past (2001, 2002), and is about to release a new online edition with extensive updating reflecting the many changes that have occurred in the past decade including:
  • Legislation affecting libraries;
  • New technologies that have affected the way libraries interact with and serve their communities;
  • The governance of the Washington State Library.
While working on the revision of the Manual, it seemed logical to move from print to an online format to more easily and readily connect users to the underlying RCWs, WACs, Articles of the State Constitution, Attorney General opinions, etc., that were the basis for statements made in this new electronic publication. Additional resources from a wide variety of organizations and agencies provide additional clarification and guidance at the click of a mouse or a tap on a touch screen. These include:
  • United for Libraries (formerly Association of Library Trustees, Advocates, Friends and Foundations), a division of ALA;
  • The Municipal Research and Services Center of Washington (MRSC);
  • The Washington State Department of Revenue;
  • The Washington State Auditor’s Office.

Two sessions of this online presentation, sponsored by Washington Library Friends, Foundations, Trustees & Advocates (WLFFTA), an interest group of the Washington Library Association, will be offered. Webinar information: --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 3) APPLY NOW FOR BOOKS FOR CHILDREN For many children in rural areas, the local public library is often their primary source of reading material. Many rural schools either have no library or a library that is inadequate to meet the needs of the students. At a time when more and more children and their parents and teachers are using the public library, these same libraries are facing increasing financial hardships and are often unable to buy the books their young readers need. The Libri Foundation is a nationwide non-profit organization that donates new, quality, hardcover children’s books to small, rural public libraries throughout the United States. The Foundation is currently accepting applications for its 2013 BOOKS FOR CHILDREN grants. To encourage and reward local support of libraries, The Libri Foundation will match any amount of money raised by local sponsors from $50 to $350 on a 2-to-1 ratio. After a library receives a grant, local sponsors (such as formal or informal Friends groups, civic or social organizations, local businesses, etc.) have 5 months, or longer if necessary, to raise the matching funds. The books donated through the BOOKS FOR CHILDREN program are used for storytelling; toddler, preschool, and after-school programs; summer reading programs; “book buddy” programs in which older children read to younger children; holiday programs; teacher check-out and curriculum support; early childhood development programs; school projects; and just to provide children with a “good read.” The next deadline for BOOKS FOR CHILDREN grants is Wednesday, May 15, 2013. For additional information, go to www.librifoundation.org/apps.html. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 4) PUSHING THE LIMITS GRANTS DEADLINE EXTENDED Are you from a small and rural public library? Would you like to increase the level of interest and involvement in STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math) topics in your community? There is still time to apply for a Pushing the Limits grant, funded by the National Science Foundation. Pushing the Limits uses a blended science café and book club model for public programs that integrate feature film quality videos and recommended reading lists of popular books. The overarching theme is one of real people, real stories, and real science. Each of the 75 libraries chosen for the project will receive:
  • A grant of $2,500;
  • Program materials, including videos;
  • Online training.

The STEM Task Force of the Young Adult Library Services Association (YALSA), a division of ALA, is pleased to announce the unveiling of the STEM Resources wiki that features a brand new STEM Programming Toolkit to help you plan a program from beginning to end, as well as links to numerous resources including booklists, links to organizations doing similar programming, and much more.
