Volume 9, May 9, 2013 for the WSL Updates mailing list Topics include: 1) PIERCE COUNTY WINS NATIONAL MEDAL 2) FILL THE BASKET AND SUPPORT WTBBL 3) GOT GENEALOGISTS? GET TIPS AT JUNE’S FIRST TUESDAYS 4) HELP WASHINGTON’S CHILDREN TO REACH OUT AND READ 5) CCC SCHOLARSHIPS FOR ACADEMIC LIBRARIANS 6) FREE CE OPPORTUNITIES NEXT WEEK --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 1) PIERCE COUNTY WINS NATIONAL MEDAL Congratulations go to the Pierce County Library System, a recipient of the National Medal for Museum and Library Service, awarded at a White House ceremony on May 8, 2013! The award honors outstanding institutions that make significant and exceptional contributions to their communities. Selected institutions demonstrate extraordinary and innovative approaches to public service, exceeding the expected levels of community outreach. A picture of First Lady Michelle Obama presenting the award to Pierce County Library Director Neel Parikh may be seen at the WSL Facebook page, www.facebook.com/WashingtonStateLibrary, and more information about the award and recipients is available on the IMLS (Institute of Museum and Library Services) website at www.imls.gov/about/medals.aspx. To view the video of the First Lady’s speech and award presentations, follow this shortcut link: 1.usa.gov/17MJczo. Again, our enthusiastic congratulations to Pierce County Library System, and its staff and patrons. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 2) FILL THE BASKET AND SUPPORT WTBBL Help the good work of the Washington Talking Book & Braille Library (WTBBL) by participating in a free online fundraiser this month, the You Pick for Charity Game, sponsored by the Inland Northwest Community Foundation (INWCF). It’s simple to do. Go to www.inwcf.org/give/you-pick-for-charity-game. Then simply move all the apples on the tree into WTBBL’s basket. At the end of May, the charity with the most apples wins. Factoid: Did you know that WTBBL is not just for readers who are blind or visually impaired? Those eligible for this service are children and adults who are residents of the state of Washington and who are:
- Legally blind;
- Deaf-blind;
- Visually impaired (inability to read standard printed materials without special aids or devices other than regular glasses);
- Learning disabled (reading disability, resulting from organic dysfunction, of sufficient severity to prevent reading of printed material in a normal manner); or
- Physically disabled (inability to turn pages or comfortably hold a book for extended periods of time as a result of physical limitations). Conditions such as severe arthritis affecting the hands, diseases affecting fine and gross motor skills such as MS and Parkinson’s, and other injuries and illnesses can make using standard print materials difficult, if not impossible.
