But this is only the beginning of the story of people and their libraries in Washington. State Library staff will be blogging, tweeting, and posting on Facebook to remember the past and celebrate the present, but they also want to hear from all the libraries in Washington about their beginnings. Please consider sharing some part of your history with us and we’ll make it part of the statewide celebration:

  • Do you have pictures of the first library in your community?
  • How about pictures or anecdotes about early local librarians?
  • Can you share some stories from the past about your library and its place in your community?
  • How did your library cope with disasters and hard times?
  • What celebrations did the library host or promote?

Help us promote and celebrate Washington's people and their libraries during this special year. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 2) GETTING THE MOST OUT OF ONLINE GENEALOGY SOURCES The Internet has been a boon for those with a passion for family history. But sometimes it can be overwhelming, even for the most dedicated researcher. Need a few tips? Come to the next First Tuesdays program, Getting the Most Out of Online Genealogy Sources, where Washington State Library’s Kim Smeenk will lead a tour of web sites that will help you to guide your patrons to valuable sources for family history such as vital records and historic newspapers. She will also share some tips on getting the most out of two of the top genealogy web sites, Ancestry.com and FamilySearch.org. This free online webinar will take place on June 4, 2013, from 9:00 – 10:00 a.m. PDT. For more information about First Tuesdays, visit sos.wa.gov/q/tuesdays. For instructions on joining the presentation, visit sos.wa.gov/q/FirstTuesdays. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 3) WALE PROPOSALS DUE NEXT TUESDAY Next Tuesday, June 4, is the deadline for proposals for “Reflections 22,” the 2013 annual conference being held from October 28 – 30, 2013, at Campbell’s Resort in Lake Chelan, Washington by WALE (Washington Library Employees), an interest group of the Washington Library Association. Please consider sharing experiences that have enabled you to better yourself, your job, and those you serve. Potential topics include anything that you have developed, borrowed, or improved upon – a new tool for the trade, a new skill set, a new way of looking at things. Also – think outside the library. Presenters from outside of libraries are welcome to submit proposals. For additional information and to submit a proposal, go to www.wla.org/call-for-presenters. Deadline: Tuesday, June 4, 2013. Contact Kolleen Schlenker, [email protected], or Geri Ventura, [email protected]. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 4) CE GRANTS FOR STARTING STRONG Each year, the Starting Strong Institute brings together members of Washington’s early learning community in a conference that facilitates the sharing of innovative ideas and strengthens the connections between early learning and K-12 professionals. The 2013 Starting Strong Institute will be held at the Lynnwood Convention Center, Tuesday, August 6 – Wednesday, August 7, 2013. The conference will include breakout sessions focused on P-3 (pre-school through 3rd grade) alignment and implementation including WaKIDS, the Early Learning Guidelines and Common Core, and Community Collaboration. Librarians and support staff who need financial assistance to attend this event may be eligible for Continuing Education (CE) grants, provided they work ten or more hours per week (paid or volunteer) in a library or library consortia that is eligible to receive LSTA (Library Services and Technology Act) funds. Training must meet one or more of the 7 LSTA priorities and have a direct benefit to the library customer. To provide additional support during these hard economic times, the Washington State Library is temporarily lowering the match for CE grants to 25%, and will cover the remaining 75% of eligible expenses. CE Grant applications must be postmarked no later than 30 days before the beginning of the conference. For additional information about CE Grants and to apply, visit www.sos.wa.gov/quicklinks/CE. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 5) GALE/LIBRARY MEDIA CONNECTION TEAMS AWARD The Gale/Library Media Connection TEAMS Award recognizes and encourages the critical collaboration between the teacher and media specialist to promote learning and increase student achievement. A panel of education industry professionals and Gale staff will evaluate nominations based on:
  • Demonstrated collaboration between media specialists and teachers during a school year;
  • Effective techniques that positively impact student learning and achievement;
  • Support received from school leadership;
  • Ability for others to replicate this best practice.
Three winners will receive:
  • $2,500 cash award;
  • Gale products worth approximately $500;
  • 1-year subscription to Library Media Connection;
  • Educator’s Professional Bookshelf, worth approximately $500, from Linworth Publishing.
