They build good will, spread the word about your services, and add to your list of successes. But with a limited budget, what can you do? Come to the next First Tuesdays program, Events for (Almost) Everyone, where David Junius of the Washington Talking Book & Braille Library, will share the rudiments of low- or no-cost events for which the idea and spirit behind them are as important as their successful execution. For instructions on joining the presentation, visit sos.wa.gov/q/FirstTuesdays. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 2) WORLDSHARE ILL UPDATE & TRAINING OCLC’s new resource sharing service, WorldShare® Interlibrary Loan, now has new features including 2-per-page printing of book straps and requests. Members of Washington OCLC Group Services have the unique opportunity participate in a managed migration from WorldCat Resource Sharing to the new service. It’s important to take advantage of this opportunity for training in the new service before access to WorldCat Resource Sharing ends in December. If your library has not already registered for WorldShare ILL, please register at sos.wa.gov/q/WA-ILL-Form. Training for Washington libraries will be held at 11 a.m. Pacific Time as follows:

Also visit sos.wa.gov/q/WayfinderNews for more links and information, including additional archived webinars and self-paced training options. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 3) LAST CALL FOR IPAD TABLET LAB GRANT APPLICATIONS The purpose of the iPad Tablet Lab grant cycle is to provide iPad tablet training labs, each consisting of 10 Apple iPad tablets, a Bretford PowerSync charging tray, and covers for each tablet, to 15 qualifying libraries in state-funded K-12 schools and/or community and technical colleges in Washington State. The training labs may be used to support a variety of trainings and other library services including, but not limited to, providing educational support and access to online resources. Awarding of grants will be weighted to ensure equitable geographic disbursement of labs across the state. Potential awardees should have the ability to use and maintain the equipment. For K-12 schools, preference will be given to schools with the highest level of participation in the USDA National School Lunch Program (NSLP). This grant cycle is supported with Library Services and Technology Act (LSTA) funds and includes the purchase of equipment that provides access to the Internet. All qualifying K-12 schools in Washington State that can provide certification of compliance with the Children’s Internet Protection Act (CIPA) may apply. CIPA certification is not required for participation by community and technical college applicants. For grant guidelines and the application form, go to sos.wa.gov/q/iLab. Apply now! Grant applications are due no later than 4:00 p.m. PDT, Friday, July 12, 2013. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 4) REGISTER BY JULY 8 FOR WMLA ANNUAL MEETING All Washington library staff are invited to register for the 2013 Washington Medical Libraries Association Annual Meeting and Conference, which provides a great environment for continuing education, vendor evaluation, and professional networking. The theme of this year’s conference is “Get Your Geek On!” The lineup of speakers and topic are relevant to public libraries as well as health libraries.

  • Where: Bastyr University, 14500 Juanita Drive NE, Kenmore;
  • Registration deadline: Monday, July 8, 2013;
  • Cost ranges from $15 to $50 and includes vegetarian lunch and continental breakfast sponsored by EBSCO.
For more information and to register, go to www.wmla.org. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 5) DUST, DROUGHT, AND DREAMS GONE DRY ALA’s Public Programs Office invites applications from public, academic, and special libraries for Dust, Drought, and Dreams Gone Dry, a traveling exhibition made possible in part by the National Endowment for the Humanities. The exhibit occupies 300 square feet and consists of a series of programs designed to help public audiences engage in discussions about the human and ecological consequences of one of America’s most disastrous environmental experiences. Twenty-five sites will be selected to host the exhibit and will each receive a grant of $1,200 for expenses related to exhibit programs.
