Volume 9, July 11, 2013 for the WSL Updates mailing list Topics include: 1) WANTED – NCCE CONFERENCE PRESENTERS 2) WLA SCHOLARSHIP DEADLINE EXTENDED 3) REFORMA DÍA/BOOK DAY AWARD 4) NEW RESOURCE FROM ALA ADDRESSES PRIVACY CONCERNS 5) CIRCULATING NOW – NLM’S NEW BLOG 6) FREE CE OPPORTUNITIES NEXT WEEK --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 1) WANTED – NCCE CONFERENCE PRESENTERS The Northwest Council for Computer Education (NCCE) is seeking proposals from educators, teacher-librarians, consultants, and corporate partners for the 43th Annual Conference and Exposition being held at the Washington State Convention Center in Seattle from March 11 – 14, 2014. Presenters are needed to share their knowledge and expertise on a variety of topics covering a wide range of academic disciplines in K-12 education, represented by the following Conference strands:

  • Emerging trends;
  • Leadership;
  • Promising practices;
  • Tool showcase.

Submissions are due Thursday, August 1, 2013. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 2) WLA SCHOLARSHIP DEADLINE EXTENDED The Washington Library Association (WLA) has extended the deadline for applications for Maryan E. Reynolds Scholarships. WLA members who are currently enrolled in an ALA-accredited MLIS degree program and have completed at least one semester or quarter are eligible to apply. One or more scholarships, up to $6,000 per recipient, will be awarded to applicants who demonstrate leadership potential in the profession and a commitment to libraries and library service. Applications are due Wednesday, July 31, 2013. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 3) REFORMA DÍA/BOOK DAY AWARD REFORMA, the National Association to Promote Library and Information Services to Latinos and the Spanish-speaking, invites applications for the 2013 Estela and Raúl Mora Award. The Award is presented annually to the most exemplary celebration of El día de los niños/El día de los libros (Children’s Day/Book Day) or El día de los jovenes/El día de los libros (Youth Day/Book Day), also known as Día. The Mora Award consists of a $1,000 stipend and a plaque to be displayed in a public area by the winning institution(s). For more information and to apply, go to sos.wa.gov/q/Mora2013. Applications must be received no later than Thursday, August 15, 2013. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 4) NEW RESOURCE FROM ALA ADDRESSES PRIVACY CONCERNS The American Library Association (ALA) and our nation’s libraries have long been committed to the principles of free speech, protection of privacy, open government, and access to government information. These democratic principles have translated into education and advocacy within the library community and with the public. In response to the recent revelations about widespread surveillance by the National Security Agency (NSA), ALA has launched a new web site, ala.org/liberty, to provide resources for libraries to convene forums and moderate community discussions on privacy. Many more resources will be added in the weeks to come. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 5) CIRCULATING NOW – NLM’S NEW BLOG The History of Medicine Division at the National Library of Medicine (NLM) has launched a new blog, Circulating Now, to encourage greater exploration and discovery of one of the world’s largest and most treasured history of medicine collections. Graphics and links to historic materials on the site bring the history of medicine to life. Whether you are familiar with NLM’s historical collections, or you are discovering them for the first time, the blog will offer an exciting and engaging resource to bookmark, share, and discuss with other readers.
