Nancy Stewart will show you how at Sing With Our Kids, a free workshop based on her two-year pilot project of the same name, where attendees will learn how to:

Enhance programming with extensive free materials;
Plan and host multi-generational singing events that educate participants about the role singing plays in early literacy while building family and community;
Raise awareness of library resources facilitate their use across all areas of a young child’s life, from home and extended family, to school and community;
Incorporate technology responsibly into early literacy programming and community outreach.

Lunch will be provided for all attendees. Registration will close on each session either when capacity has been reached or 2 weeks prior to the session so that catering can be arranged. Workshops will be available at the following times and locations:

Rosemary Washington, Library Associate at the Greenwood branch of the Seattle Public Library, will share examples from her own blog, as well as examples of creative blog posts from libraries across the country, booksellers, and other companies in the private sector. Designed as a continuing education opportunity for staff of libraries in Washington State, this free web presentation, which will take place on August 6, 2013, from 9:00 to 10:00 a.m. PST, lets attendees share their skills and successes and learn about new topics. For instructions on joining the presentation, visit sos.wa.gov/q/FirstTuesdays. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 3) THERE’S STILL TIME TO REGISTER FOR PNLA Don’t miss a power-packed week of engaging programs, inspiring speakers, and the opportunity to network with friends, collaborators, and colleagues, old and new. Register now for the 2013 Annual Conference of the Pacific Northwest Library Association (PNLA) and learn from the wonderful array of speakers including:

Keynoter, Ally Condie, author of the international bestseller, Matched, which was chosen as one of YALSA’s 2011 Teens’ Top Ten, and named as one of Publisher’s Weekly’s Best Children’s Books of 2010;
Marshall Shore, (aka the “Hip Historian”), a Library Journal “Mover and Shaker” and a leader in the move toward “Deweyless” Libraries;
Nancy Stewart, recipient of two Parent’s Choice Awards, an ALA Notable Recording, and the CAYAS Award for Visionary Library Service to Youth, who will speak on the importance of music and early literacy.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 4) BOOKS FOR CHILDREN GRANTS The Libri Foundation is a nationwide non-profit organization that donates new, quality, hardcover children’s books to small, rural public libraries throughout the United States. The Foundation is currently accepting applications for its 2013 BOOKS FOR CHILDREN grants. To encourage and reward local support of libraries, The Libri Foundation will match any amount of money raised by local sponsors from $50 to $350 on a 2-to-1 ratio. After a library receives a grant, local sponsors (such as formal or informal Friends groups, civic or social organizations, local businesses, etc.) have 5 months, or longer if necessary, to raise the matching funds. The books donated through the BOOKS FOR CHILDREN program are used for storytelling; toddler, preschool, and after-school programs; summer reading programs; “book buddy” programs in which older children read to younger children; holiday programs; teacher check-out and curriculum support; early childhood development programs; school projects; and just to provide children with a “good read.” The next deadline for BOOKS FOR CHILDREN grants is Thursday, August 15, 2013. For additional information, go to www.librifoundation.org/apps.html. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 5) ARSL – BEST CONFERENCE FOR RURAL AND SMALL LIBRARIES Register now for the Association for Rural and Small Libraries (ARSL) 2013 Conference, which offers something for everyone. The keynote speaker at the Opening Session will be Lee Rainie, Director of the Pew Research Center’s Internet and the American Life Project. Pre-conference sessions run the gamut from hands-on NASA activities for your library to reimagining library spaces and skills for 21^st century staff and board members. Conference workshops include:
